Irregular Heartbeat

My sister-in-law has just been for her routine check with the midwife who told her that the baby's heartbeat sounded irregular - she was told to go straight to the local hospital where they confirmed this - the medical staff have told her that it is of no concern just as long as they are aware for the labour (due in 6 weeks).

Does anyone out there have any experience of this, as this is her first baby and I think they have not told her the truth about possible consiquences so as not to worry her.

I don't believe they'd lie to her to reassure her. IME the doctors seem to want you to be aware of the implicatyions of everything.
As they have said it probably just means that they will monitor the baby's heartbeat closely during labour so they know immediataly if there is a problem and can act quickly.
I have an irregular heartbeat and it has never caused me any problems so it needn't be a serious condition. Tell her to try not to worry.

I've got an irregular heart beat too and it's not caused problems. Tell your sis to talk through with the midwife. It's probably nothing to worry about, and like the doctors said - something to be aware of at the birth etc. If she's still not reassured, she should keep asking til she is reassured though. No point worrying by herself...

An irregular heart beat was found in my child when i was in labour i then had to have an emergency cesarian. Perhaps finding it this early on will prevent this from happening.
My son has had an operation for it, and had to be seen every four months at the begining, he is now down to once a year. They are excellent at monitoring him and are overly cautious. I know that he is in the best hands. Not sure if any of that helped but hey ho. Good Luck to her.

Tnanks for the messages - I'm sure they haven't lied to her as such but sometimes they don't tell you the full implications - lets hope that catching this early on will mean that she won't have to have an emergency caesarian.

At least if the baby goes into special care for a short while that won't be scary for her as my son was 11 weeks prem so she knows what goes on in there!
