How long on average do people stay in hospital after childbirth?

If everything goes well and there are no complications, how long do mother and baby usually stay? Is it just a 24 hour stay? Do some people not even stay overnight?

I gave birth at 5am, was home by 8pm. Only had to go to post-natal because of meconium in the waters when they went so dd on hourly obs for 12 hours, then it took a couple of hours to actually discharge me becasue there was only one midwife covering ante & post natal wards and she was struggling to find the time to fill out the paper work. TBH I kind of wish I'd stayed the night given how bad the first night home was... haha!

1st was about 3 days I think (over a weekend) 2nd had him in the morning, home in the afternoon.

About 12 hours both times and that included time for "enhanced" observation on both babies.
First time it was right but second time I was pretty shaky and asked for a wheel chair.

Dd was born at night so I went home the following lunchtime.

Da was born at 6am and went home 6 hours later. Although to be honest thy tried convincing me to stay because I lost quite a bit of blood. But the ward was so noisy I couldn't even get 5 minutes of sleep despite being up all night in labour and giving birth. So I went home.

BF both of them.

Same day for me - baby arrived at 8am and I was out by 11pm. Happily nursing and confident I could do it.

I had a straightforward birth and could have gone home that afternoon, they asked if I wanted to stay the night for help with breastfeeding and I chose to stay, they offered a second night too but I went home instead. Glad I did the first night there.

Three nights for me, one in antenatal/delivery ward (induction), then two in postnatal. DD was born by EMCS at 10pm and was a bit slow to start effectively suckling, which is why we were kept in. Although we were fine to go home in the morning of the final day, it took until late afternoon for the discharge papers to be sorted.

I'm hoping to be able to get out more quickly with #2, the peace and quiet at home was blissful.

I had mine at 2am and 3am and each time was home by mid morning.

WiIdfire · 25/02/2016 10:52

In 2 days before (induction took that long) and 5 days after (baby on NICU) so was climbing the walls a bit by the end. The day after we got home we spent the whole day in the park so I could see some sunshine.

With my first I was due to be discharged after 24 hours but he developed complications so we were transferred to another hospital and ended up being in for 5 days.
With my youngest, he was born at 5.44am and we were discharged at 11.30am. I did stay a little longer and have lunch though because my husband hadn't expected us to be leaving so early so was out for brunch with his family.

FraterculaArctica · 25/02/2016 11:05

5 days for me - EMCS and my recovery was a bit slow, then on Day 3 DS had lost over 10% of his birthweight so we were automatically in for another 2 days till they were happy feeding was going OK. I was in no state to go anywhere before then anyway. Other than the lack of sleep I loved being in - was really out of it and wouldn't have felt safe without hundreds of HCPs on tap to advise (well sort of on tap, they took a long time to respond to buzzers but at least you could press a buzzer!)

10 hrs with no 1, 1 &1/2 hrs with no 2 and 12 with no 3, 3rd one was a c section.

AveEldon · 25/02/2016 15:32

It depends on what time you deliver and how everything goes
DC1 - born mid morning, stayed 2 nights
DC2 - born early hours of the morning, went home that evening. They would have happily kept us another night cos the discharge paperwork hadn't been signed but I said we were leaving anyway
DC3 - born 5pm, stayed 1 night
