Query - faint blood streaks in discharge at 30wks - should I be worried?

For any MWs/pros or those with lots of experience out there.

(Please don't read this if you don't like bodily function discussions btw.)

I've had two admittedly faint streaks of pinkish blood in vaginal discharge (that's clearish in consistency as usual). I'm 30 wks pg - is this anything to worry about, or is it normal? Everything feels as it usually does - I was wondering if this could be related to it being the time I would usually have had a period - I've noticed whenever things like this happened in the first few months it was always about that time, but it hasn't happened for at least three/four months now. I now realise I probably had a tiny bit last night but I wasn't sure about it at the time as I didn't look too closely.

any blood loss in pregnancy should be looked at by a midwife ..... if it is defniteily from your vagina , and you are losing a lot of discharge, you should get it checked....

might be blood loss from a small cervical erosion, which is perfectly harmless , or it could be a sign the cervix is starting to dilate and you are losing your show, which is not neccesarily meaning labour is imminent, but at 30 weeks, you should be checked ...

how thick is the discharge? is it clumpy, mucusy, thick or like thinner ,regular discharge>

no cramps, period like pains or backache?

You could also have an "irritable cervix" which can mean pink streaks in normal discharge. Is it after you have been to the loo or shouted or something which might put pressure on your pelvic floor?
But do get it checked out. An irritable cervix just means a couple of tiny blood vessels have burst, as it is already in a swollen state and does not mean you are about to go into labour.

Thanks for early replies.

Discharge is as normal, thinnish. I had just been to the toilet too so I suppose there was some ahem, strain, involved.

I'm supposed to see the MW on Tues morning anyway - if nothing else happens, do you think it's ok to wait until then. If I get more, I'll ring the hosp. I do feel slightly period-like pressure in lower stomach but then my guts are a bit of a law unto themselves and I often feel like that! And I have recently had lunch so that has probably got stuff moving through the old intestines.

sounds like a plan ! let us know how you get on !

danceswithreindeer · 30/12/2006 15:40

I would ring the hosp and talk to a midwife to be honest. It's no bother to them to have a quick word with you.

Are you rh- callie? If you are call ASAP, any blood loss in rh- needs immediate attention.

lulumama · 30/12/2006 16:06

an ecellent point mkg ...

But seriously Callie if you are rh-, you need to call your midwife and if you can't get in touch with the midwife within 20 minutes call the emergency room, tell them your situation go right in.

dueat44 · 30/12/2006 17:56

Do call / go in asap. I had pink streaks of blood in a clear discharge at 30 wks, and it tuned out to be leaking waters. Hence a risk of infection / early labour.

Worth checking out.

danceswithreindeer · 31/12/2006 12:20

Callie - did you go in? Hope everything is ok.

CallieNewYear · 01/01/2007 20:02

Hi all

I had a bit more blood in discharge today, this time with little specks of proper reddy/pink blood in it, so I rang the hospital and went in this afternoon (Happy New Year!). I had a heartbeat monitor on for about an hour and then an internal, and everything's fine. Thanks so much for your concern - MNetters have been a lifeline during this pregnancy!

I've just got to wait and see if a swab they took shows any infection - hoping not to hear from them cos then everything's fine.

Oh, forgot to say I'm not RH- but thanks for pointing that out. See, it's just a mine of information around here - thank god!

What a relief Callie! Did they say what was causing it then?

CallieNewYear · 03/01/2007 22:25

The following day I had MW appt and as soon as I said I'd had sex a day or two before she said that would have almost certainly caused it! It really wasn't much. Better safe than sorry though.
