Hi Ladies, dd is 16mths old she was supposed to have her vaccines before christmas but has had a bad cold for weeks now. Dr won't do the vaccine if not fully well. I took her to the doctors a week ago with a hacking cough, he gave her some antibiotics and he told me it was a chest infection. She has got no better and today I noticed a red rash, well spots really, on her body, mainly her chest and back but this evening they are on her face and neck too. She hasn't had a fever at all though, just runny nose, cough and now these spots? I didn't think anything of it earlier and put it down just to a viral rash, but then I panicked. What if it is measles? I am 20weeks pg tommorow. I know it can be dangerous to pg women too.
I will probably take a trip to the docs again tommorow, but just wondered if any of you had any experience of knowledge on measles to get me through the evening.

I am not very knowledgeable, but I think it's german measles rather than measles that is the concerning one if you are PG. weren't you immunized against measles as a child then?

ledodgychristmasjumper · 28/12/2006 21:03

iirc the measles rash is more blotchy than spotty and there is definately a high temp involved hang on i'll try and find a pic.

lulumama · 28/12/2006 21:03

rubella is more dangerous in the first trimester and you will have been checked for immunity to rubella ie german measles at your booking in.....

you also need to be sure DD has measles too!

measles rash
I reckon it's probably a viral rash rathert than measles ds is the same atm hacking cough , snotty viral rash but he does have a temp.

MereNoel · 28/12/2006 21:09

Ah hah, my heart has stopped racing quite soo bad. Thank you. I found that picture too a moment ago and she doesn't look like that, she looks similar to, just like a heat rash but she has not got hot, IYKWIM. I am immune to rubella so that bit is re-assuring.

Don't panic. There are lots of non-specific viral rashes as I found out when ds had one. I found a really good website which gave a good description of the most common ones, but can't find it again. I did come across this one though...

viral rashes

I think my ds had roseola which didn't do him any harm...

Good website, thanks Mumpbump.

Well, dd now looking just like the pic's, ut oh!! I checked on her before we went to bed last night and it looked worse, but this morning it is terrible! Hardly any "normal" skin on her body. The starting off small pink spots have now all joined together to form big blotchy red patches all over her. Her neck and face and forehead is the worst, she looks like a tomato. Poor love, I am going to the doc's after lunch with her. Still hoping it is just a viral rash as she still is not unwell, eating, sleeping and still no temp, I'm sure if it was measles she would be a bit ill with it? Will find out later, thank you for your help last night. I'll keep you posted! xxx

good luck at the doctor's. Is it an itchy rash?

MereNoel · 29/12/2006 12:40

No, i don't think it is itching her.

With measles, generally they are red, red rash, red eyes , and temp, app they look really miserable

Mumpbump · 29/12/2006 13:50

When ds had his rash, I went to A&E twice, firstly because his temperature was 104°F and secondly because of the rash. The paediatrician said it might be measles, but not to worry unless he had difficulty breathing, in which case to call an ambulance. So I don't think measles is necessarily a real nasty. Hope your dd gets better soon.

Thank you, Well spent two hours at open surgery, (France is no better than the UK for waiting obviously). Not measles or even better not german measles. Dr checked her over very throughly, glands every where, chest, ears throat. He said that he can find NO signs of a NEW infection and all that he can put it down to is a bad reaction to the penicillin (sp) that she has been on for a week for her chest infection.

Obviously I'm relieved that it is nothing serious or contageous, but a bit dissapointed that she may be allergic to penicillin. He recommended an allergy test when she is a little older to check, and has scrawlled big NO PENICILLIN remarks all over her health book. Thank you for all your re-assurances yesterday and today. You ladies are sooooo great.

Gla dit was good news. I'm allergic to penicillin and it has never been a problem they just give an alternative antibiotic when needed.

Piffle · 29/12/2006 17:07

sounds liek viral rash
measles makes kids very very ill indeed
DD was absolutely k'od with it massively high temp 42 deg pls
