Hi - I don't want tto know the gender of the bubs but have a keen eye.

How does this work?

Are they careful where they look?

Is it hard to tell if you can see a willy anyway?

x

This is my third pregnancy and i've never been able to tell from scans. We didn't find out for the first two and the sonographer took no special measures to stop is looking. This time round we found out and even with the consultant showing where the penis etc were, I still couldn't see them!

My DH was adamant he saw a penis waving around with second - he was looking at the umbilical cord as the sonographer informed him. It makes me wonder how many of those who say how obvious their boys were at scans were actually looking at something entirely different.

Monstamio · 04/02/2016 16:17

We wanted to find out, but the positioning was really bad so the sonographer had to give me a few good jabs to make the baby wriggle round so he could see! So this might be a non-issue!

Wardrobespierre · 04/02/2016 16:43

Our ds was undeniably a ds. The sonographer laughed at the unfortunate shot as ds flipped position. They'd just had brand new machines and as they were in that area anyway, the sonographer showed us his kidneys and bladder and you could see him weeing. And tbh, if his penis didn't give him away, the scrotum would have been a clue! With dd and the older machines, you genuinely couldn't see.

Hi kaymondo, thats interesting bout how difficult it and and bout the cord. Monstamio & Wardrobespierre - seems sometimes angle the giveaway.

after chat on here today think I may say to sono I'd rather not know but don't worry about taking any special measures to tell me not to look. If I see something I see something if I don't I don't. I'm happy with that. Especially as now realise that sometimes you can't tell a thing. So if the angle right on, oh well..still will not asked to be confirmed. As it wavees in wind ;)

Everyone thanks so much everyone...mind made up on step forward whoa hoo! Flowers all round! I will leave this thread finally to have a rest from me; I like nurturing them....yes I know mummys instinct HA

If they offer you a print out, you'll need to be strong and say no! Our 20 week scan pic left absolutely no doubt. I won't tell you what the identifying factor was, but knowing already from our harmony test that we were having a boy, it was abundantly obvious from our picture! Had we not known beforehand, then, penny may not have dropped, but still- better to say no to the pic!

londonrach · 04/02/2016 17:54

Citymole...can you explain the harmony test please

spacefrog35 · 04/02/2016 18:00

The sonographer couldn't tell at ours so we had no chance!

wonkylegs · 04/02/2016 18:07

DH is a consultant and used to looking at scans but the sonographer turned the screen away when checking the bottom half on the baby. DH was convinced we were having a girl but he turned out to be a boy. This time he's refusing to guess.

SparklyTinselTits · 04/02/2016 18:08

I felt like the baby was a boy. I convinced myself it was a boy.
I thought I could see a penis.
I most definitely could not.
i definitely have a little girl!
I couldn't determine genitalia from the scan, but I identified other less obvious parts of the body Hmm

CityMole · 04/02/2016 18:19

Sure London. I'll be 40 when I have my baby, which seems to land me in a high risk category regardless. It means that, regardless of nuchal fold measurements/ bloods, the chances are that my testing for downs/ the trisomies would come back as high risk. I knew I wouldn’t want an invasive diagnostic test like amnio, so I went for the harmony test.
It’s a scan at 10 weeks (to ensure there is a heartbeat, and also to ensure there is ONLY one heartbeat as multiple pregnancies aren't straightforward to test for using maternal blood and trying to separate out the feta blood.) After the scan it’s a simple blood test which tests for chromosomal markers of Edwards, Patau and Downs syndromes. It cannot give you an outright ‘negative’, but it can confirm that your risk is extremely remote which statistically speaking is virtually the same. Because it tests foetal chromosomes it also means you can determine gender from ten weeks.
It cost us £500, but I understand in some cities where there is a wider choice of clinic, the prices are more competitive. Also some NHS areas seem to give it on the NHS for high risk women.
It was money well spent for us- I know there are plenty of other things that could go wrong, but this has helped provide some peace of mind. And the scan at ten weeks was brilliant (albeit transvag in my case due to tilted womb)!

londonrach · 04/02/2016 19:05

City me snap on age and thanks x

Emus · 04/02/2016 22:23

I've a keen eye too.

For DS1 we wanted to know and once she pointed it out it was very obvious.

For DS2 I said we wanted to know but as OH couldn't be at the scan I wanted her to write it and seal in an envelope. I told her I was going to look away but she reassured me I wouldn't be able to see anything. Cue a very good and clear shot of a willy and two balls and her hurriedly trying to make up an excuse. I should have just bloody looked away!

AnnaMarlowe · 04/02/2016 22:27

We had lots of pictures - still no idea.

TheDisillusionedAnarchist · 05/02/2016 12:44

We didn't want to know at 20 week scan but then when major problems were discovered, we did, they hadn't noted it. We had 2 more scans including a specialised 3D research one and still couldn't see nor could they. Eventually found out at a private 3D scan. It is rarely that obvious.
