I have terrible haemorrhoids and am 29 weeks pg. I've had them before after a previous pregnancy and since week 14 of this pregnancy but they have become viciously painful over the last two days. I can't stand or sit without extreme pain and lying on my side is the only way I'm able to get some (relative) comfort. I can't sleep with the pain either.

My GP has given me prednisolone suppositories (scheriproct) and a lidocaine topical ointment to anaesthetise the area today but the pain is still unbearable - pretty close to the pain after the forceps delivery of my DS1....

I'm sure that the suppositories will help after a couple of days but does anyone have any tips for pain management between now and then? I'm doing hot shallow baths twice a day and while they usually help, they're not helping anymore...

If they're really excruciating they could be thrombosed? Happened to me after DS2 and they had to be cut off. Since then its happened once, and using ice to shrink them (tho painful) did help.

Poor you! I've had these on and off since having my son so I know how you feel it's agony. The medication you've been given is what I've had and does work but it does take a while. I always use cold baths rather than hot - a few inches of freezing cold water as it reduces swelling. Witch hazel is really soothing too. You could soak some cotton wool in it and then leave it in situ as it were. These are my go to's coupled with painkillers and lactulose

Thank you both

Shanster, how would I know if they've thrombosed? My GP didn't look at them today...

The doctor would have to look at them. I had to see a colorectal specialist (the pain was worse than labour). He had a look and then removed them - they'd turned into hard blood clots about 3/4 inch long.
