We went shopping today and I am confused about Moses baskets. They either seemed too small or not secure enough on the stand or tacky looking. I am after something of a decent size, rocking base, nice looking and not too expensive.
Nearly went with a lovely rocking crib but OH pointed out it would have to stay upstairs whereas a Moses basket can be moved off the stand and around.
If anyone could be so kind as to recommend anything that would be greatly appreciated by this indecisive, clueless first time mum Blush

I wasn't going to bother with a moses basket but MIL bought us one anyway. We got a lot more use out of it than we thought we would. Deffo more than some here. DD was in it till about 5 months I think

My ds was over 10lb and we still got about 8 weeks out of the moses basket. We carried it from room to room very good for the newborn stage when they sleep lots during the day. I have seen them for as little as £20 if you shop around.

guiltynetter · 01/02/2016 07:51

ziggy I agree! my DD lasted in the Moses basket until 6 months, she's not particularly small (8lb 3 at birth and quite long!) I constantly hear people say they grow out of them in weeks but maybe they have tiny baskets...

BikeRunSki · 01/02/2016 07:54

In the MN boo The Rules, there's a chapter called "Don't Buy a Moses Basket".

icklekid · 01/02/2016 07:56

I really liked our moses basket and ds slept in it for naps and overnight for 5 months. It was a clair de lune one (bought from eBay 2nd hand with new matress) with a rocking stand. Worth looking at

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 01/02/2016 07:58

I got mine from ebay for 99p - they can be useful, but I wouldn't pay £££s for one. Do you know anyone you can borrow one from?

I would also say they are more useful for second children. With DC1, we could just put her anywhere, but with DC2 we needed a safer place to put him to avoid DC1 sitting/jumping/'cuddling' him Smile

Bedside Troll crib upstairs and pram carrycot downstairs. All naps and sleep should be in the same room as you until! 6 months anyway from SIDS guidelines. I found that by using the pram this was easier as I could easily more it from room to room as necessary!

My DS lasted in his Moses until he was 6 months old, he was and still is a tiny little thing so I think it was worth the investment as we got loads of use from it.

Would you consider buying a second hand basket and buying a brand new mattress?

oneconfusedchick · 01/02/2016 08:45

We got Moses basket from John Lewis for about £35 - my DS lasted 6 months in it - am planning to use again for new baby with new mattress. I guess it depends on baby - mine did not settle well but eventually he would sleep in the Moses basket. The basket is fairly portable but be careful of stairs etc! X

oneconfusedchick · 01/02/2016 08:48

Also - my DS was not small - about 75th centile and we still managed with him in the Moses basket for 6 months!

Sometimesithinkimbonkers · 01/02/2016 08:58

We used our Moses basket for all 3 children and our disabled DS was tiny and slept in it until 11 months... It was from Babies r us

SerenityReynolds · 01/02/2016 09:05

We have had a basket for both of ours, but it and the stand were bought second hand. We just bought the mattress and sheets. It lasted DD1 4.5 months. DD2 is now 8 weeks and we should get another 6-8 weeks out of it.

If you do get one, definitely go second hand.

putthePuffindown · 01/02/2016 09:48

We've got one for DD, she's 8 weeks (91st centile for height Shock) and there's still lots of use left in it (it's 75cm long). We got it and a stand for free on Gumtree and just bought a new mattress and bedding. I'd be annoyed if I'd paid money for it as we've had to buy a crib too (£25 delivered also from Gumtree, again we bought mattress and bedding and also gave it a lick of paint!).

Oysterbabe · 01/02/2016 12:30

We have a Snuzpod for overnight. It rocks and you can take the top part off the stand and take it downstairs if you want. The top part also rocks without the base. We have a Sleepyhead which we use for naps though. DD still has acres of room to grow into. She was only 5lbs at birth though.

greenlizard · 01/02/2016 14:00

I had a snuz pod for upstairs and a cocoona baby which I moved round the house. When he grew out of that (10 weeks) he slept in his pram carry cot or his bouncer but to be honest he wasn't a big fan of sleeping during the day unless I was walking/driving him around!
