My SIL has just had her 20 week scan and was told her placenta is quite low - no one would tell her waht this meant exactly, or give her any reassurance and she's a bit worried.

Has anyone been throough the same experience.

BTW the pregnancy was via IVF and originally was twins but she lost one at about 12 weeks.

yes but the majority of them move up on their own. mine didn't and i had bleeds and had to stay in hospital from about 35 weeks then have a c section. most of them do move though hth

Thanks Southeastastra. She's having another scan at 35 weeks - just getting used to all the worry that goes with being pregnant too.

MT - I had a low lying placenta when pg with my ds. I has another scan at 32weeks and was told that if it hadnt moved by then (although most do) that i would need to go back at 36weeks and if no change then a c-section would be required to avoid excessive bleeding.

It worried me to begin with, as no-one really wants a c-section as it is such a major op. So i just decided to think of the positives of having one and resigned myself to that. In actual fact it had moved and no further scanning was required.

I am currently 22 weeks pg with number 2 and had my scan on the same day as your SIL. Thinking that i would have the same again, i was very pleased that in fact my placenta had already started to move upwards. No further scan for me

Tell your SIL not to worry and just to look forward to seeing her bubs again. I now have to wait 18 weeks until i get to see my dd.

Hope that is of some help

Mine was low lying with DS..had lots of bleeding which was very scarey..but it lifted by about 25 weeks and the bleeding stopped pretty much straight away.... If it lifts then it isn't a problem...if it's still lying low (Placenta Praevia) then they'll recommend that you have a section

Was told I had a low lying placenta with DD at 20 week scan.

Had another scan booked for 32 weeks where they said it had moved 5 cm so it was ok.

Was just advised to come straight into the hospital if I had any bleeding but fortunately I didn't.

A friend described it as a piece of chewing gum on a balloon. As the balloon gets bigger the chewing gum will move. I thought it was an easy way to think of it.

Your friend will be fine. Don't panic!

mine was low at 20 week scan as well. Am habing another scan next week to check and then, if it is still low, I'll have another in a couple of weeks.
I don't think it's anything particularly to worry about. My MW said if it is still low at 37 or 8 weeks then I would have to have a Casaerean which is not what I want but not the end of the world if it means a safe delivery
She also told me that 99% of the time, the placenta moves anyway
