We just did two pregnancy tests this weekend and found out we are pregnant. Live thousands of miles from 'home' and I am like eeeek what do we do first, what am I not allowed to eat, what books should I read, how soon should I see a doctor?

Will be staying overseas for birth etc...

Any tips and guidance greatly welcomed. Asking on here because of course we can't tell a soul in RL

Congratulations! I know how you feel about not knowing what you're meant to do next.. When I went to the doctor they pretty much said 'ok', told me to take folic acid and to ring the midwife to arrange booking appointment. In the UK at least doctors don't seem to confirm the pregnancy, so the first few weeks can feel a bit lonely. That's why Mumsnet is great (except when it's snarky!) I'd recommend contacting your doctor at about 7 weeks to arrange booking appointment and scan :-)

Where are you based OP?
I had my baby abroad and it was sometimes a little confusing as where I live pregnancy is very medicalised, with lots of scans and absolutely no midwife appointments (everything with ob gyn).

I'd go for an appointment with your gynecologist first who will take you through the process where you live. And as a pp said , it's good to get connected with other future mums in your country.

NHS is great advice although keep an open mind as guidelines do differ from country to country.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. It's an exciting (and overwhelmig) time!

ffs. She's excited! She doesn't need a lecture about semantics

JessieMcJessie · 24/01/2016 15:43

Sophia she's abroad, "booking appointment" doesn't mean anything outside the UK.

Yes OP I forgot about folic acid, you need to start that pronto, though if you were ttc you should be taking it already. Beware, prenatal vits in Asia are way more expensive than in the UK.

kittyvet · 24/01/2016 15:46

Congratulations! Make sure you are taking folic acid if you haven't started already!

Congratulations OP! I've been using the Ovia pregnancy app and find that quite good for keeping track of baby's development, my dates, and it also has searchable food and medications lists to check if various things are ok. Have a lovely time on your honeymoon!
