Uff! I feel like I do not wish to eat any of my regular delicious home made meals. No veg, no beans, no flours, all I want is some grilled piece of meat! Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm pescatarian but I eat meat when I'm pregnant! I crave it but I'll go off it the day I give birth and get my breastfeeding sweet tooth instead!

It's funny what pregnancy does to us. I was the opposite, I love freshly cooked chicken but when I was pregnant with dc1 i have never smelt anything so revolting in my life. It smelt like rotting flesh

Ughnotagain · 22/01/2016 22:40

you can eat some cured meat

I was veggie pre-pregnancy. The week I took my test all I could think about was eating ham. So I did. (My baby is now 8 months old and I haven't gone back!)

If you want it, have it. You've only yourself to answer to. If you feel funny about buying/cooking it then get something cooked when you're out and about, or at a restaurant.

Why not cook the prosciutto? It make the most amazing crispy bacon sandwiches.

I'm not even veggie and now that's what I want to eat Smile

I've been veggie for most of my life, thankfully never had meat cravings while pregnant, it still repulses me!
It depends how serious you are about being vegan, maybe you could try the veggiel/vegan quorn stuff before going straight back to meat? Or Linda McCartney's stuff, even my meat eating OH loves it, he says her stuff is better than some meat products! :)

I thought the current advice re: cured meats was to freeze them for a few days in advance of eating them and the act of freezing them kills any nasties that might be present. I think that's on the NHS website.

One of my friends rang me in tears because she was craving Big Mac's - like you she was vegan and was upset about craving meat, but was more upset about the fact she wanted McDonald's!

She went from vegan to vegetarian (for most of the time) while pregnant and has done the same for all subsequent pregnancies. At the time of her first pregnancy (90's) there wasn't as much organic food about but she is far happier eating organic meat where she can determine the welfare of the animals.

It's difficult but if you want to eat meat, as others have said, eat out so you don't have to prep it at home

I have a strictly vegetarian cousin who are some meat during pregnancy and the early BF days.

No idea what drove her to do it, but she squared it as medicinal.

I lifted my Nestlé boycott during pregnancy when I desperatly needed peppermint aero and caramac.

Reddog147 · 27/01/2016 08:57

There are probably 2 main reasons to be vegan - concerns for health, or the planet. If you've cravings then maybe you need for health. Eat a small amount. See how you feel. If you're worried about the planet then congratulate yourself for all the cows you've not contributed to and eat a small amount of something free range, organic, whatever.

Also pregnant and veggie. But the kind of veggie who eats meat occasionally. It's not a religion so there is need be strict. No one needs to know...

rageagainsttheBIL · 27/01/2016 09:50

I had mad meat cravings, and ended up eating a piece of steak (at a restaurant, where they source it v carefully - I couldn't cook it) I had to have it well done though, and I didn't really enjoy eating it tbh.

This time I'm eating oily fish about 2-3 times a month.

I'm very much of the belief that eating a piece of meat does not "undo" your veganism or vegetarianism, there's no reason why you can't or wouldn't go back to your regular diet after and the benefits to yourself and the planet still stand.

CultureSucksDownWords · 27/01/2016 18:06

Reddog, you've missed out another reason which is ethical/moral ie you may believe that it is morally wrong to kill and use animals for food.

Breadandwine · 06/02/2016 23:00

If you do have a craving for meat, maybe sietan will fill the bill - worth a try, anyway. The cutlets especially are very meat-like.

The meatiest sausage I've found is made by Fry's - local HFS or H&B. Bit expensive, but quite tasty.

I completely understand, OP. I experienced the same thing in my last pregnancy. Almond milk was suddenly repulsive. I needed Burger King bacon cheeseburgers.

Husband, sworn carnivore, found it hilarious. I did feel bad, but I did eat the meat because I felt my nutritional needs should come first.
