Shall I cut my hair?

Yes, this is the pathetic type of advice pg has lead me to ask for ... am totally incapable of making up my own mind about these things and basically, want someone else to blame if it all goes wrong

I grew my hair from a v short crop in July 2000 until now, just below shoulder blades, so I could ahve "wedding hair do". (Yes, my hair takes forever to grow).

Anyway, I want to cut it because:

  1. short hair = less maintenance in mornings and can get away with washing it every other day instead of every day
  2. it's getting v hot out there and crop would be cooler
  3. I can't dye it but still want a change.

I want to keep it because:

  1. I grew it through several, horrible in-betweeny stages for 4 years ffs!
  2. DH says I look younger with long hair (BIG plus!)
  3. I can do things with it (well, if I could be bothered I could)

Help?

from what your saying dont cut it you will regret it afterwards on the days you cant be bothered to mess with it keep a bobble handy and just throw it back thats what i used to do

kalex · 20/05/2004 16:56

Leave it long, if after 6 weeks you still want to change, then cut it, but remember, that long hair can just be tied back, even when wet and slung under a baseball cap.

Don't cut it! If anything get it layered like cameron diaz or jennifer anniston, I'm always having this dilemma too but am always so happy to have long hair, i'm getting mine layered next time i have it cut as it will be easier to dry. also my dh has a freakout everytime i say i might cut it! (not that i would let that stop me if i really wanted to cut it).

I wouldn't cut it. I normally don't think too much about these things, normally have it cut short when I get fed up. But I have considered a lot of things now that I'm pregnant. First of all, as someone else said, I would look funny as my face is quite round at the moment. Most importantly: LABOUR. I'm gonna be SOOOOO hot as I'm due in July, so I want to have the option to put it up, completely away from my face.
Solution: I admit that it's hot at the moment so I'm gonna have it trimmed and layered (long layers). Plus I'm gonna do DIY highlights (because hairdressers never do them light enough for me. They refuse to for some reason.).

Had my hair cut short for the first time about two weeks before I got pregnant, loved it the first time, had shorter at the back longer at the front, but wasn't able to have the same hairdresser the second time, not so good. The main thing I've noticed is how much more often I have to have my hair cut, not good with a baby i guess.
My DP (jokingly I hope) threatened to dump me if I cut my hair, he REALLY didn't want me too...he loved it!! Put it this way, baby was made pretty quickly afterwards!!! It's true that blokes think they like long hair, but really they are worse than women, they don't know what they want!
Glad I read this thread, been umming and ahhing about doing my roots, feeling absolutely minging with them, so I reckon I'll go out and buy the bottle tomorrow!!
Hope you've made your mind up overnight BIBIBOO!!

I had my hair cut short 16 days before dd2's due date. VERY good idea. Nice haircut, and I went into labour 4 hours later too.

Sorry, that'll probably just throw YET another spanner in, won't it.

I tend to agree with Bundle about v short hair (although in fact am currently growing mine out). But then she is my elusive MN twin.

Well, I didn't do anything rash over night, I'm not bald or anything. In fact, I am feeling quite youthful and summery with my hair in loose pigtails today. Helped that I had a great night's sleep and my hair was behaving this morning.

Think I will keep it long just for some options, but I feel some layers coming on this weekend.

Had mine all cut off last time I was pregnant - the heat got too much by the time I had dried it I had to get back in the shower to wash the sweat away!!

Think shorter hair looks more glam and makes you look younger - look around you most if the world have lovely long hair and I agree with Bundle it is the men that like long hair (they wouldn't if it were theirs and they had to look after it thats why they like their women to have it) I am just super lucky that DP loves short hair and gets all excited for me everytime I go to get mine shorn off!!

I think going to the hairdressers with mong hair and coming out with a crop is one of the mst exhilarating feelings in the world and yes long hair is easy to tie back but if you have a crop you have to do literally nothing with it and it still looks cool, young and trendy!!

(Another short haired woman!!)

OK Bibiboo - here's what I think. What I think is don't cut it. THIS IS NOT THE TIME FOR DRASTIC ACTION.

  1. You say your face is round. It will likely get rounder and puffy towards the end.

  2. Your ankles and feet will probably get puffy too, so shoes will become not fun things.

  3. Your hair will possibly be the only non-deranged thing about you.

Last time mine was short-ish. This time I am keeping it a bit longer. Already feel that the perky pleasures of a pony tail are stopping me look quite so much of a pin-head, balancing me out. I had highlights about a month ago and will have more when I need them.

Toots · 21/05/2004 10:34

Sorry, that all came out a bit strong. Your ankles may very well remain delicately turned throughout. Whoever said give it a few weeks and see if you still feel like it, that sounds like a good idea

BIBIBOO · 21/05/2004 11:41

I'm having layers, and highlights in a very expensive salon so I will (should) feel a million dollars on Monday - until I ring them for an appointment and find out they are booked up for the next 3 months!

Keep how it is I had my hair cut to shouldr length when pg and if you want it long leave it as it is perhaps have a fringe or layers for ease of just wash and leave so look ok without styling

Crunchie · 21/05/2004 12:08

Glad you decided against the crop. I stupidly decided to get my longish hair cut short (not a crop) just after I had given birth - what an idiot. It was looking all lovely and full and glossy so I thought it could take the short cut. Then it all decided to fall out! Within a month I was losing all teh hair I had kept while PG and the short funky cut looked lank and stringy, with a nice halo of whispy baby friz. MMMMmmmm lovely. So I then decided not to cut it at all, and let it grow for a year or more, and found that post baby I had curly hair Never had that before!! I had one year of nice curls/waves before it all went back to usual. I prefer long hair as it is easier than short, I always stick i up in hot weather

Good luck

BF Guide is adamant not to have drastic hair changes in preg. Have toyed with having mine chopped but sort of also know that it's my fat belly etc etc I am unhappy with really but my hair is the only thing I can do anything about, so am resisting the urge.... for now...

On the don't-use-dye front I have reverted to henna and various shampoos, conditioners and mousse type products that "put highlights into brown hair" - that's ok isn't it?!!! Isn't it??
