Worrying lack of fetal movements

Me again,

Just typical when i have started so many threads today that i need to start another one.

I thought i had started getting into a pattern with knowing when baby was waking and sleeping - baby usually fidgets alot first thing in the morning - then goes uite til about 11ish, then moves on and off throught the course of the day.
However, i haven't felt one single movement yet today - i have pushed at my tummy a bit to try and provoke a response but nothing.
I was leaning over the bath this morning washing my hair - when i got up i felt a bit of pulling in my tummy, thought it was from just getting up too quickyl off the floor but since then i haven't felt a thing.

Am starting to panic a bit now - i know they say you should chart 10 movements in 24 hours but i usually have 10 by 10o'clock and have had nothing today.

They do sleep more towards the end of the pregnancy (start to follow proper newborn-style patterns). Have you tried drinking orange juice or something sugary?

emmatmg · 20/05/2004 14:11

If it's possible eat some chocolate and lie down on your left side. MW told me that this gets the baby doing somersaults.

Have you got an EPU at your hospital? if you have then go up there and get some reassurance just to put your at rest.

I'm sure the little'un is just resting as it's getting quite squashed in there now and moving about so much is hard work.

Jimjams · 20/05/2004 14:13

sit down somewhere comfy with the phone- try and stretch out so you would feel any movements then ring your midwives. They will have you in for mintoring. Usually the baby wakes up then and start leaping around - but they're used tp that and would always prefer to see you.

madgirl · 20/05/2004 15:14

jems don't panic. mine has this week calmed down alot, a lot of babies really start slowing down from now on hon. have you tried drinking sth ice cold? and if you are really worried then call the midwives and ask if you can go in and have them check mgxxx

Mum2Ela · 20/05/2004 15:17

my friend (a midwife) said to put some ice in a drink and wait til it is really cold then drink it quick. That should get em moving!

Defo go in for monitoring. Always best to be safe than sorry.

x

SpringChicken · 20/05/2004 15:22

Thanks all - I am at work so cannot ring the midwife as i don't have my notes with me - haven't got a clue what her telephone no. is or any of the other numbers.
Cannot drink anything with Ice in as don't have ice at work - we do have a really cold water machine so will try that.

I had read that movements would start slowing down now as there isn't much room left and the baby will start getting into position but didn't expect them to just stop

SC - you must ring the labour ward at the hospital you are due to give birth at. Get the number from www.yell.co.uk and ask for the labour ward. They will be very used to this situation and I am sure they will want you to come in for monitoring. They will take this seriously I promise you

Go and do it now and go in straight away if they want to see you.

Good luck! Don't panic!

Jimjams · 20/05/2004 15:34

Agree with dinosaur. Alternatively ring directory enquiries and and ask for the number of the hospital switchboard- then ask for the labour ward or antenatal clinic. I think they will want to monitor you asap. I did this with ds1. However it is very very important to get monitored if movements stop. My friend did (after umming and ahhing about whether to ring) and her baby had to be delievered straight away. He is now a perfectly healthy 5 year old- but wouldn't have been of she had ignored it. This is not said to panic you (although of course it will- sorry ) but just to make the point that you must stop worrying about work and put your baby first.

Do not feel worried about looking silly. I went in with ds1 and within 5 minutes of arriving he started doing somersaults. They were fine and monitored me for a few hours - and said they were always very pleased when that happened. So go- now!

SpringChicken · 20/05/2004 15:54

Ok - will ring them in a minute - DP is on his way home so i will get him to ring m with my midwife's number.

Come on baby...............just move................

How many weeks was your friends jimjams?

No advice but just wanted to say hope everything is ok SC. This happened to a friend of mine at work. We went to the nearest hospital, they scanned and everything was fine, but it was v upsetting for her in the meantime.

Take care - and the chocolate has to be worth a go?!

Jimjams · 20/05/2004 16:13

very early- 25 or 26- but apart from somehting slightly wrong with one eye- he is doing really really well. Started school without any problems.

I'm sure you will be fine- your baby wil probably show you up and start dancing just like ds1 did - but always has to be checked out!

jems let us know as soon as you can, i am sure it was. i also went in for monitoring with ds at 36 weeks, and all was just fine. x

serenequeen · 20/05/2004 20:43

any news yet, sc?

SpringChicken · 21/05/2004 08:35

Hi Guys - Thank you so much for your kind messages yesterday!

You were all absolutely right - as soon as we got to the day assessment unit and put on the trace the baby started jumping around - i still couldn't really feel the movements but could see on the screen they were definitely happening.

Midwife said it is probably where the baby is in position and there isn't much room the movements are very very slight unless the baby completely turns, hence why i couldn't feel anything.
