Not felt baby move yet....

I'm just over 19 weeks and still haven't felt the baby move, at least I haven't felt anything I could definitely attribute to being the baby.
I've heard it can take up to 24 weeks, but everyone else I know who is as far along as me is feeling the baby all the time - I feel left out! I saw MW on Wednesday and she said heartbeat was strong and regular, so baby must be ok.
This is my first baby, I'm not very big (barely have a bump either) - could this make a difference? Did anyone else out there not feel their baby until later on?

i WAS ABOUT 21 WEEKS BOTH TIMES - PLEASE DONT WORRY Oops - sorry about capitals!

shanks313 · 18/12/2006 11:56

I was late on when I felt the baby move, its only been the last 3 weeks or so that I have felt anything definite.Im 29 weeks this week.
Didnt really have a substantial bump either so dont worry,it will come lol.
Now Im feeling babys kick with my hand although shes very gentle.

DINOsaurmummykissingsantaclaus · 18/12/2006 11:56

Don't worry - it took me ages to feel DS1's movements - it's a long time ago now but I'm sure I was well past the 20 week mark.

I think lots of people don't feel it until at least 20 weeks especially with their first. Depending on how the baby is lying, some people feel very little movement indeed throughout the whole pregnancy.

I'm 19wks and started to feel definite regular movements in the last week, but not much before then. However, my bump is gargantuan!

Congratulations!

could be to with the placenta. if it's lying on the front and it can cushion the movements IYSWIM.

gladbag · 18/12/2006 12:04

I still hadn't felt ds move at 21 weeks, and was very worried despite all the reassurances. Went for my scan, and there he was twirling and wriggling and waving quite happily. I felt him move properly a few days later, so probably nearer 22 weeks. HTH.

lazyemma · 18/12/2006 12:05

I think there's quite a lot of competitive one-upmanship around the first detection of baby movements too - I've seen people on mumsnet claim to have felt definite movements as early as 10 weeks, which is surely impossible. I think baby movement is one of the things which differs the most from pregnancy to pregnancy so try not to compare yourself to everyone else. I hope you feel some reassuring kicks and wriggles soon.

alex8 · 18/12/2006 18:39

My consultant said most women don't feel them until 22 weeks. I didn't with my first until 22 and second at 20. Have 2 friends who felt movements only twice the whole pregnancy. Both had healthy babies, one huge, one tiny.

lulumama · 18/12/2006 18:46

agree with asleep re position of the placenta making a difference..if it is anterior, you won;t feel movements until well past the 20 week mark quite often

also, you may well have had little movements and wriggles and not realised that it was the baby.....

as long as there is a strong and regular heartbeat , all is well......try not to worry....xx

doginsantasgrotto · 18/12/2006 19:16

fluffyslippers - i am 25 wks tomorrow and it has only been the last two weeks that I have really felt anything and they have been really gentle (I like to think ladylike!) kicks. Again like you I barely had a bump until quite recently too - please don't worry. Easier said than done I know. You should have your 20 wks scan soon which I found really reassuring.

Good luck

divastrop · 18/12/2006 20:39

it does depend on placenta-i felt my first ds move at 11weeks,honestly,but with dd2 i didnt feel any movement till alot later on-nothing definite till 20+ weeks and she was my 4th baby.i felt very little movement throughout the pregnancy due to the anterior placenta.

pelvicflawed · 18/12/2006 21:01

I was 23 weeks when I was certain I felt the baby move (I rember becuase it was boxing day last year). Up till then I was getting really worried as each time I saw the MW she would ask if I had felt the baby and I would say nope don't think so. Once I felt it for sure I realised that I had had some odd feelings in my tummy from around 19 weeks and perhpas these were movements - if they were they wern't what I was expecting so I wouldn't have known!!!!Don't worry you'll feel your baby when your least expecting it

autumnlover · 18/12/2006 21:08

was 23 weeks with baby1, 10wks with baby2 and about 19wks with baby3, so try not to worry. i was the same, called NHS direct with baby1 because i was so worried - 2 days later felt the first kick and then it just didnt stop, and got really painful... enjoy the peace!!

tribpot · 18/12/2006 21:21

Agreed - was def over 20 weeks with ds, before I felt anything I could definitely attribute to baby (in retrospect, there were movements before then but of course you don't know what you're meant to be looking out for the first time around).

Seriously, within weeks it will feel like you have a small dog rotating in your stomach, enjoy the lack of movement, secure in the knowledge that the heartbeat is strong

3andnomorethechrimbobimbo · 18/12/2006 22:18

Can depend on the position of the placenta...if it is to the front, the kicks can be bufferred, iykwim!
Obviously everything else seems to be fine, so, don't think there is anything to worry about!

MerryBiglipsmas · 18/12/2006 22:32

i was 22 weeks pg when i first felt a flutter next to my belly button .... sweet memories of my dd (first child)

MKGnearlyimmaculateconception · 18/12/2006 22:57

I almost never felt my dh move throughout the pregnancy. I would feel him in the morning to wake me up for breakfast, but nothing after that. I'm 17 weeks now and my doctors asked if I could feel movements yet, still nothing. I think I have shy babies.

I know what your saying about being left out. My sil was 4 months behind me in my last pregnancy. She and her dh would sit there and feel the baby move, and we would watch very jealous. My dh never felt ds move in my tummy.

Nemoinapeartree · 18/12/2006 23:04

with my son I was around 19/20wks when felt flutterings and around 23 when I felt moves.
With my daughter I was around 15wks
with this baby again was quite late on around 19/20wks.

fluffyslippers · 19/12/2006 10:37

Thanks everyone for reassuring me, I will try and be patient. Looking forward to 20 week scan next week, which I hope will put my mind at rest.

Fluffy,

Dont worry I was about 23/24 weeks! Think with your first it can be easy mistaken for other things too.

Flumpytigger · 21/12/2006 12:55

I'm in my 19th week now and I was just wondering what baby's kick will feel like? Please don't just say 'like someone kicking you'

I just really want to know what to expect; is it uncomfortable, comforting and strange all at the same time!?

I'm so excited but also so nervous waiting for my baby to kick!

I have had the odd twinge around the front of my tummy today and I can't figure out if there just growing pains or baby moving, or what!? I also felt bubbles last night!

aaaaah I'm going to be such a nervous and stressed our mummy at this rate! eeek!

lulumama · 21/12/2006 13:00

it feels like........bubbles ...! to start with , then definite pokes and prods and kicks! LOL! varies from woman to woman, also according to where the placenta is and the position of the baby!

marymillington · 21/12/2006 13:00

you maybe have felt it, but not recognised it! with both my pregnancies it felt in the early stages like bubbles in my tummy, or like a imagine a little fish swimming around might feel.

now, at 34 weeks it feels like someone is pogo-dancing on my bladder.
