I feel awful. I'm throwing up every couple of hours. I'm also so hungry, but gag every time I go into the kitchen and can't actually eat. I was prescribed avomine last week, but it just makes me sleepy and doesn't stop any sickness.

DH is lovely and is being very patient, but I'm fed up and have just had a cry to myself. How do people go through this twice?!

Excuse the mistakes above - I know it's your not you're in the first sentence. Stupid autocorrect!

Can your DH bring you a ginger biscuit in bed when you wake up? Also try seabands.

SpecialStains · 30/12/2015 18:09

I've been keeping crackers by my bed. I'll try Ginger biscuits. Thank you. :-)

Hi SS - I've rebooked to see the practice nurse next Tuesday, she's lovely. Will be useful just to talk through the emotional side of things I'm struggling with.

Yes, first baby for us. We were lucky and fell pregnant the second month of trying. I'm 36 so not much time to waste!

I had 2 packets of hula hoops and I've just managed half a jacket potato and some beans and feel better. I'm drinking orange lucazade too. GP did test my urine and all fine.

WRT work, I think you need to ensure you can get out of the lab every hour to nibble something, like you say it does help doesn't it.

I had bananas by the bed last night and every time I woke up, took a bite.

Hi all, thanks so much for all the advice.

So far I've tried:
Avomine
Sea bands
Boiled sweets
Gin gins
Ginger cordial
Ginger biscuits
Crackers
Eating tiny amounts often
Eating mostly beige foods
And I'm sure there's more.

It's been better since I started forcing myself to eat little and often, but today I tried a walk into town and was gagging every few minutes. I didn't throw up until this evening, but I still can't contemplate most foods.

I have to go back to work next week. I'm starting an MRes part time, and can't do that if I'm signed off sick. How can I get myself into work on Monday? It's mostly the nausea and gagging I'm struggling with, and movement makes it worse.

I really want to be able to be in work next week. Please can you tell me anything that helped you continue as normal?

Huge sympathies, it's bloody rubbish. Had it horribly from 6w-22w, hated every moment of it - to the point that DD is just about to turn 4 and I'm only just willing to consider doing it again!

Try and nibble little and often if you can, just a bite will help as low blood sugar exacerbates the nausea.

Go back to the GP and ask if you can maybe try something else. I started on cyclizine which didn't do too much, then changed to Stemetil which helped more. Next time I will ask to try others if I'm still being sick 6+ times a day, I think.

Re work - with hindsight, and considering doing it again, I would say stay signed off if you can't work. From now to 9-10 weeks you'll also have the 1st trimester exhaustion, which just makes it worse. This is such an important time to take care of yourself, and it's just a few weeks to be off. Once you start feeling less knackered you'll hopefully find the sickness itself a little more manageable.

Can you do any work from home or reduced hours? I'm planning on being brutally honest if I get it again and just telling them (politely, of course!) that they have a choice of me being signed off for a while, or still being able to work, just from home.

Hope you feel better. And yes, get thee to the hyperemesis thread!

SpecialStains · 02/01/2016 18:51

Thanks thurlow, I have got myself to the hyperemesis thread.

I know that I'm not really fit to be in work. I'm constantly both nauseous and starving hungry, and the gagging isn't a pretty sight! I'm just starting to feel lonely at home, and I do like my job (hospital lab, no chance of working from home).

I guess I'll see how tomorrow goes. I am going back to the gp Monday morning, have requested to see a female doctor who has an interest in women's health so hopefully she'll be more sympathetic than all the very patronising people I've seen so far! (Next person to mention Ginger will be force fed Ginger products until they promise never again to taunt a pregnant lady with the idea a few biscuits will cure them!).

If you have been consistent with the avomine but getting no relief it's time to try the next rung on the ladder. Look at the Pregnancy Sickness Support website for info on medications.

photographerlady · 02/01/2016 22:31

feel for you, this is my second pregnancy and week 5-13 was a nightmare. I felt so nauseous I couldn't focus on anything, especially work. Ended up spilling the beans to my boss and taking a few days off a week til the holiday period.

Luckygirlcharlie · 02/01/2016 22:47

Ginger did sweet fa for me. Made me feel sicker if anything! The only thing that did help me a bit was polos. Major sympathy. Just lying on my bed trying not to gag too! 30+1 and it's just back a bit this week. Ugh. Hopefully a passing phase! Second and last pregnancy!! X
