If there was at least three things you have/would put in the hospital bag and was/is really useful, please share this!

I found lip balm to be an important one! (theres nothing like dry irritating lips)

Big water bottle
Long length, thin dressing gown
Lanolin if breastfeeding

Bishboshbash · 28/12/2015 19:42

Maternity pads
Food/drink
Slippers
Phone charger

Samaritan1 · 28/12/2015 19:55

Maternity pads
Dark coloured towels/nightwear
Massive knickers - I bought huge, black supermarket cheapies that I threw away afterwards.

I also took some energy drinks and "breakfast biscuits" in a cool bag - lifesaver. The delivery until didn't have any energy drinks and wouldn't give me any snacks, but I really needed the sugar. Also bf made me constantly hungry so I had something to snack on in the middle of the night Grin

Ooh, and flip flops/ slippers with a waterproof sole. The toilets on the mat wards can be a bit messy.

Goodnight, I'm taking 5 of each. 2 blankets and 2 cardigans. I like the ones with built in mitts.

Took 2 hats too but don't always use them.

Last time I was in for 5 days. Emcs so dh and dm washed stuff. So for a straightforward birth I'm not sure if you need as much.

Blueturquoise · 29/12/2015 07:35

Dd is 10 weeks old. I Packed a bag with a section for baby and a section for me.

I also had two more (small) bags of clothes at home packed for both of us for dh to bring in. It meant we didn't lug a big heavy bag and also less rifling through the bag to find stuff when I needed, and I simply sent home bags of washing with dh and swapped for clean bag of clothes.

Flip flops were great (except if your feet swell so much you can't use them :()

Practical essential stuff would be
1 Maternity pads - about 6 per 24 hours would be a good approximation.
2 Multi Mam nipple pads were absolute life savers. Much much better than lansinoh - healed up nipples in between feeds so I had no issues (having previously on my other two do had days of cracked nipples - this stuff is MIRACULOUS, and it s not sticky and doesn't stain everything like lansinoh does). They re expensive but you can cut one in two and use in each nipple and change regularly.
3 Multi gyn - same as multi Mam but for your neither regions- again a revelation and amazing for healing. I am getting both of these as a gift for every new mum I know from now on Wink

Lip balm and a light non sticky body moisturiser or oil is lovely for after showering as I found my skin dry and the air quite drying).

Several changes of PJ s or lounge trousers and tops ) I had lots of seperates- long vest type tops, and (dark) PJ bottoms and light cardi s - I didn't get time for showering but sometimes a freshen up and new PJ s did the trick. Am still using them all at home too now. What with locacia and breastfeeding, plus your body starts to loose all the extra fluid...... You get the picture! On that note it s worth making sure you have plenty of bedding - sheets/ duvet covers ) for your bed at home too, you ll find you need to change them a lot in the first few weeks, and there s nothing nicer or more conducive to helping you snatch some sleep, than fresh bedding.

I also had wipes, clean t shirt, sweater, deodorant and toothbrush for dh - he was in the hospital overnight with me and was so grateful for them!

Another life saver was cereal snack bars as Others say - you re staving after the effort of labour. Also dh went to m and s and bought lots of their fresh fruit packs and smoothies (and Percy pigs Wink) and food for me on the first day.

Comfy socks with grips on the bottom of them

Phone and charger and external battery (extra battery you plug into phone rather than charging it - no idea what it s called)

Baby hat (as well as Nappies, vests and several baby suits and light cardigans for baby)

Vaseline or pharmacy grade olive oil for baby's bottom and areas of dry skin

Bottles of lemonade/water
Lots of snacks
Shower gel
Change of clothes
Camera

MintyBojingles · 30/12/2015 19:40

Oh, and waaay more maternity pads than you think you'll need! Confused

Top tip - if you're sore down below after, use a squirty bottle of water to squirt on yourself when you wee, makes peeing easier, and cleans gentler. Very refreshing. Then smear aloe Vera gel and witch hazel gel on your pad - very refreshing and helps the healing process. Total godsend!

Blueturquoise · 31/12/2015 07:20

Multi gyn compresses I think they re called you get a box of them, they re in a little
Foil sealed sachet - essentially a gauze soaked in balm. Amazing stuff. So healing and comfortable:
I did the witch hazel etc on previous oreg but these multi Mam were better IMO - I m all for convenience when you r sore and have a new baby and less bottles of stuff cluttering up my bathroom or to be remembered to bring to hospital. My friend who is a gynae Physio recommended them to me and the lactation consultant s in the hospital recommended the nipple versions

Blueturquoise · 31/12/2015 07:21

Another tip was if your nipples crack don't get them wet - like say in the shower etc - gettin them wet sortof exacerbates the crack/ cut. I used lansinoh in the shower to prevent them getting wet

TattieHowkerz · 31/12/2015 09:55

A cardigan (for you). Good to have something to stick on over your visible nipples/pjs/nightie when family come to visit.
Cheap slippers that you can throw away afterwards. Mine were filthy! I suppose it is all the visitors traipsing around the ward.
Snacks.

I wouldn't bother with much in the way of reading material. It is handy to pack a separate bag for the baby that can be brought in after birth, so you aren't lugging too much around.
