Combined Test Result

Hi guys, just wanted some advice if possible? I am 13 weeks and 4 days pregnant. I had the combined test for Down's Syndrome last Monday (at 12 weeks 6 days) and I received the results today - classified as low risk, at 1:1163.

In my area, high risk is classified as 1:150 so this is significantly lower. I have calculated the risk as a percentage and it's just about 0.086%, which I do recognise is low - obviously that means that I have a 99.914% chance of having a healthy baby.

I understand that other people get some really high risk results, and that that must be terribly distressing, and that they would probably give their eye teeth to get a result like mine. I do understand that.

However, it doesn't take away from the fact that I am still really quite worried. I was expecting my risk to be much, much lower, as I am 31, so not particularly old, and very healthy myself (I believe weight can affect your risk?). I am surprised by how upset I am. I immediately started thinking about getting the Harmony test, which is supposed to be more than 99% accurate at detecting Down's Syndrome fetuses... But would that be a ridiculous thing to do when my result is low anyway?

The results wouldn't come back for two weeks, and because of the Christmas bank holidays etc I won't be able to get a scan until at least 14 weeks, which would probably mean that I would be well over 16 weeks by the time I got the results. It seems like awfully late in the pregnancy to be finding out. I just don't know.

What would you guys do?

With a lot of deliberation I too went for the Harmony. I was low risk 1:800, 38 yrs old. Waiting on result now. My hosp offers it; NHS smaller fee if high risk and private £500. NIPT testing, I had to know what to ask for though and phoned the midwifes unit at hospital, where they put me in touch with the secretary of the consultant.

I saw on web private test called Serenity that was £300 and something. They send you a pack, you get your bloods done then post them back. Serenity lab is in London. Harmony bloods go to USA.

When looking right into Serenity though I noticed that their false positive count was higher than Harmony, so that's why I went for Harmony in the end. Maybe worth looking into this further by contacting Serenity if anyone interested reading because they do keep saying how low their mistakes are compared with rest on market.

False positive being that they say your babe has a problem when it doesn't at all. One of the problems with the DNA test that put me off. It's when there's dodgy dna picked up from elsewhere that doesn't reflect the true situ for your babe.

If you find you get an NHS high risk there are other tests now that are more comprehensive than harmony. They are dearer.

I had bad health coming up to planning for family and think it set me on a path to worry about baby more than I would normally, over 35 scare stuff you read also added to that.

I'm in good health but on high risk pathway at hosp. Which does lend to my consientious worrying about the little one.

!Congratulations on your result, it's great it's given you peace to move on and enjoy your little one! All the v best.

' I have a 99.914% chance of having a healthy baby.'

That is simply NOT true. That is your risk of having a baby with trisomy 21,18 or 13, if that's what you opted for.

There are many other chromosomal, congenital and structural abnormalities that can occur that can only be picked up either post-natally or via ultrasound.

Unfortunately sky full is absolutely right!
I had low risk of DS but my son was born with a rare gene mutation. Only 30 others in the world !!!
Do you know what!!! My DS is amazing.... With all disabilities!
A disabled child is not the end of the world!!!

Hi All,
I had my combined test last week and looking for an alternative way to get the result rather than just sitting and waiting the letter. Could you please let me know if the results are visible in any application or is there a number to call and get the result earlier?
