I've just had a scan at 29+6wks and the doc said she wanted me to go for a further, more detailed scan next week as she thought she could see some dilation on a ventricle on the baby's brain. she reassured me that there was nothing to worry about, that there was no danger to the baby etc etc, but I am now worried sick - if there was no potential problem, then why would she want me scanned again?
I've googled this and all I can get are medical sites which I can't make head nor tail of...does anyone know what this dilation means? Has anyone had any experience?
I lost a baby at 15 weeks before this pregnancy so maybe I'm being over cautious. Any words of wisdom would be a comfort.

sorry i tried looking in my midwifery textbooks but couldnt find anything.

sometimes things consultants say can be very worrying, when they may be just 'double checking'

i hope that everything goes ok

good luck

hi honey...sorry you are so worried....it is not good to be left worrying and anxious like this...

it might be a 'soft marker' , ie something that might indicate a potential problem..and it might well be nothing...once it has been seen, it needs to be rechecked......it might be something that disappears as the pregnancy progresses, or might have been so slight, she wants to recheck in a few days..........if they are not concerend, more likely to be nothing, or at least, nothing sinister

bearing in mind your previous loss, of course you are hyper anxious and aware that things can go wrong.

can you call the midwife for some more reassuracne?

sorry not to be much help, fingers crossed all is ok, if the hospital are not worried, best you try not to! easier said than done though,no?

This is something called ventriculomegaly - try googling that term.

The ventricles should measure less than 10mm. If they are between 10 and 15 mm, then it is mild ventriculomegaly. Over 15 mm, severe ventriculomegaly.

Mild ventriculomegaly, if it's the only finding, is not too much to worry about. Severe ventriculomegaly can mean more problems.

Wait and see what the next scan brings. They might well be okay then.

thanks for your messages....have managed to get an appointment at a private clinic later on today, so hopefully I'll get an answer one way or another...

spoke to my midwife, who seems to think it's the fault of the scanner rather than an actual problem with the baby. She reckons any problems would've been picked up before now. We live in Germany so they are very thorough about things here...hopefully this is all much ado about nothing..

thanks again for your help.

Good luck.

Do let us know how you got on.

just to let you know, everything seems absolutely fine. The doctor at the clinic said he could see what the other doc was talking about, but he would never have flagged it up in the first place as it's nothing to worry about. He even did one of those 4d scans so I saw what baby looks like! Amazing.

I'm so relieved. Thank God.

thanks again for your replies, especially you, Emkana.
