Protein in urine

Hi everyone!

I've recently been discharged from hospital after ebing diagnosed with acute SPD - horrendous but I won't bore you with the details.

I was having a quick look through my handheld noted earlier and noticed that my last urine test (Monday) was showing a plus 2sign. As I haven't had any problems with my urine all the way through my pregnancy (I'm 34 weeks at the moment), I was wondering whether anyone could explain to me what this actually means - sorry if I'm sounding a bit stupid!

it could mean an infection, possible pre-eclampsia, or jsut a contaminated sample. Didn't they follow it up? 34 weeks is rather late on to ignore a 2 plus.

No-one, including the Consultant, seemed to be concerned. In fact, no-one mentioned it and I've only just noticed it myself tbh.

if you are concerned, give your midwife a call and get another test done.

lulumama · 14/12/2006 22:57

if it is positive in conjunction with raised blood pressure , oedeama and swelling, then it is cause for concern....as kelly says, it might just be a contaminated sample.....but you could call them for reassurance tomorrow... but wihout the other signs, unlikely to be anything sinisetr.....

One high protein test shouldn't be anything to worry about. If you have more than one then you could have some issues. It's normal for sugar and protein to be off a few times. Remember you're pregnant and your body is going crazy.

Are you drinking enough fluids. I just had my checkup yesterday and the nurse said that my sugar and proteins were good, and that meant that I was getting enough fluids.

Try getting more water in your system, that may be all you need.

oedema is swelling ! sorry, two glasses of wine...also headaches , esp with visual disturbances are a sign of pre eclampsia too

My calves and ankles are swelling nicely but I don't think they're swelling over and above what is termed as "normal". I'm also wearing support tights at the moment as I'm completely immobile due to SPD so they should be helping with the swelling too. Thanks for the advice - I'm seeeing my Consultant again on Monday so no doubt, they'll test my urine again. What does plus 2 actually mean anyway?

keep your legs elevated as much as possible....protein ++ means there is protein deteceted, not sure at how many ++++ it becomes an issue......swelling in later pregnancy is normal to a point.......

you can call the midwife before monday if concerned...

Thanks lulumama

This is from babycenter.com
"* Protein Excess: protein in your urine can be a sign of a urinary tract infection as well as kidney damage or certain other disorders. Later in your pregnancy, it can also be a sign of preeclampsia if it's accompanied by high blood pressure. If you have protein in your urine but your blood pressure is normal, your sample will be sent to the lab for a culture to see if you have a UTI."

During my last pregnancy I occasionally got high protein, whenever I did they just told me to drink more water. It wasn't until my bp started to get higher that they were worried about preeclampsia.

Harry2007 · 15/12/2006 00:46

BP fine at last check (same time as urine test) 120/66

I would say as long as your bp stays fine, you should be fine. I mean it would jump, mine jumped from 120/76 to 150/100 in a week. Of course being pregnant in August, working, and just closing on a house, not to mention being as big as a house, would make your bp rise. They though I had preeclampsia because of protein (I never drank enough water I will admit), swelling, and high bloodpressure.

Anyway, seriously make sure you are getting enough water. Your kidneys may just not be processing everything and is pushing it out through the urine.

Let us know how you go. It's so nervewracking when odd things happen in pregnancy even if they're normal.

Harry2007 · 15/12/2006 01:51

IKWYM I thought I had the perfect pregnancy until 2 weeks ago when I was diagnosed with severe SPD - am unable to walk as a result. Pregnancy does have the ability to spring things on you!

Hopefully, I'll know more on Monday after seeing the Consultant.

I feel for you. It sucks when one thing goes wrong, then another, and another.
