Breech 28weeks. Tell me the odds are high to turn.

Exactly as the title says. Had a 28 week growth scan today and baby is breech. My biggest fear is a section. I've had 2 vaginal deliveries with no intervention (induced but everything else straightforward) and the mere thought of him not turning and me needing a section petrifies the life out of me.

I know if someone was asking me this id tell them that there's plenty time to turn. I suppose it's just different when it's yourself.

Please tell me your experiences of baby's turning in time.

My first was breech, don't know until 37 weeks. With ds I was determined to have a home birth, I had growth scans too and they worried me more as he was breech at 28 weeks so I was convinced I was just a funny shape and I just was destined to have breech babies!
I had the wester technique, did moxibustion and listened to Maggie Howell hypnotherapy for turning a breech baby, I know it sounds odd but actually it made me come to terms with whatever position he was in was the right one for him..he turned by 30 weeks and was in a great position. Please try not to eat too stressed about it. I had a c section with dd, it was fine, planned so very calm. I was happy to consider a breech birth with ds but had also come to terms with a c section if needed and had a plan for making it as natural as possible too. Good luck!

My baby was breech at 36 weeks, I spent lots of time on all fours, laid with my legs up the wall - as recommended on the spinning babies site! - etc. Was booked in for a c section today (40 weeks), arrived, waited a couple of hours, just before getting prepped they gave me a quick scan and he has flipped! No idea when but at some point in the last month clearly! So on my way home now to await the natural order of things!

MusicalFanjo · 04/01/2016 11:42

my second was breach at 36 weeks and turned at about 37/8 weeks I think.

I think I read somewhere that subsequent babies are able turn much later than first babies.

MusicalFanjo · 04/01/2016 11:50

OP I'm scared of the thought of them turning him also

Now this is something I suggest you (and any other pregnant woman) research. Doctors can be quick to suggest an ECV without making you completely aware off the risks associated with it.

There is absolutely loads of time for baby to turn! Don't be too disappointed yet!

Missdee2014 · 05/01/2016 11:22

That's fab TwoDrifters!
I was at day assessment on Sunday and I asked the mw there to check his position and he's turned already. She said not to worry at this stage (30+3) as they can turn frequently still. It seems I got myself into a bit of a flap over nothing. Fingers crossed though he stays head down and doesn't decide to turn again as I really am terrified of a cs. I realise I need to get my head round that fear though as it could happen regardless of baby's position.

Thank everyone for help/advice. ThanksCake

It's not even 'diagnosed' as breech at 28 weeks, not until 34 weeks- at least that's what i was told. At 28 weeks it really is not an issue at all!!

my DS was breech until 36 weeks.. DS2 seems to be transverse at 34, which is a lot more serious!

dottyaboutstripes · 05/01/2016 12:19

I had a transverse presentation at 37w and oblique breech at 38w and they both turned by themselves.
I did have a c/s for my 6th baby after 5 vag births, and whilst it's not what I would have hoped for/chosen, he was worth it Smile

Have a look at the spinning Babies website.

Plenty of time yet for your little one to turn, but if they don't, don't be scared of a section! They are honestly fine. The epidural or spinal isn't painful - it feels a bit odd but it takes moments.

I personally wouldn't consent to an ECV- that's just my personal opinion after weighing up the pros and cons of them. They are not without risk and I would refuse and insist on re monitoring and c section.
If you do have one, insist on extended monitoring (my local centre do three hours but you need one hour absolute minimum) also ask how many the practitioner has done, their success rate and complication rate. Do not, under any circumstances be pressured into an ECV unless you understand the risks and there is full neonatal intensive care in the same building.

TwoDrifters · 05/01/2016 13:13

I also turned down an ECV as I did my research and didn't believe it was worth the associated pain and risk. I cannot recommend the spinning babies site highly enough!

Loads of time to turn!

I just had DD by c section as she remained breech - we suspect because I had a low placenta for much of the pregnancy.

By all means I'd rather have had a natural birth, and the recovery not easy, but it's fine, and a very different experience to natural labour (in a nice way!)

minniebear · 05/01/2016 13:30

DD1 was footling breech, which they refuse to turn manually, at 36 weeks. Section was booked. At 39+3, I woke up and was sick everywhere in the middle of the night, which was her turning head down. DD2 was breech at 28 weeks, transverse at 38 weeks, but spun round to head down by 39 weeks.

So last minute turning does happen!

That said, both of mine were sections for completely unrelated reasons! Both calm and positive, despite me not even being able to have a blood test without tears usually!

skankingpiglet · 05/01/2016 13:32

Also weighing in to say there is plenty of time.
However, if they don't: My DD was breech and delivered by elcs and I was shitting a brick about it. I'm phobic of needles, and although pretty good at dealing with gore in emergency situations (seen a few pretty nasty injuries at work), the thought of a section made me feel ill. I was shaking so hard when they put the cannula in my teeth were chattering, it was really embarrassing but completely out of my control. The spinal turned out to be a breeze compared to the cannula, even though they used numbing cream and spray for the cannula! The surgery was even easier, it was so quick and calm, and I was having cuddles with DD before I'd even really registered she was out. I remember eating toast in recovery (45mins after I'd walked into the operating theatre) wondering what exactly I had been so scared of. It wasn't what I had wanted, and I'll be hoping for a vbac this time as it is of course major surgery, but it was so much better than I thought it would be and really isn't anything to panic about. As others have said, you may end up with interventions even if the baby does turn, so worth knowing it's not that terrible in any case Smile

Pocket1 · 05/01/2016 13:34

DD was breach at all our scans - and despite lots and lots of movement, she never turned. I had a planned c-section and it was really fine. I waddled down to the theatre and yes, I was nervous, but every delivery is nerve-wracking. It all went fine though and was over fairly quickly. I took it easy afterwards but had no pain or soreness. Good luck Smile

ChicaMomma · 05/01/2016 13:45

I agree Skipton- i'd turn down an ECV too- not only from a risk POV, but i just figure if teh baby is comfortable in that position, there's a reason. So i'll let him decide. That was what i said on DS1- if he's still breech at 39 weeks then we'll have a section, if he's not, then we'll go with the vadge option! he turned into cephalic by 36, so vadge it was. But for me the ECV was a non runner.
