Hello
Im 18 weeks, and for the last couple of weeks Ive noticed that I sometimes wake up and cant move my arms or hands and that they are so full of pins and needles that they are almost 'buzzing' and throbbing. Thing is, its not necessarily painful, just uncomfortable and weird to wake up to in the middle of the night. All the threads ive found on CTS say that its agony. So just wondering if this is how it starts or if Ive just got bad circulation,
thanks

Hi I'm experiencing this too, really bad in the mornings. I'm now 30 weeks.
I told my MW and she said it was probaly linked to the position I was leeping in and to hormones. However I will mention it to my GP when I see him next week.

I experienced this with all of my pg's (that's pregnancies and not pigs!!!!) I have been told that you can experience CTS in pg and just put it down to this, it's certainly symptomatic of CTS although I'm sure the intensities vary. It's just another of those little pregancy 'bonuses' that you'll have to live with....Sorry.

I used to try to sleep with my hands not above my shoulders to lessen the pins and needles, but you move about that much in the night.......

Do you also have trouble gripping things like a butter knife first thing in the morning? I had quite bad CTS when I was pg with dd, but as the midwife promised, it disappeared overnight once I'd given birth.

Get your midwife to refer you to a physio at the hospital for some splints. I wore them at night and they helped minimise the aching and pain, even though I could have done with wearing them all day too.

I would also suggest buying your own pair as after a fortnight of wearing them bed, they start to stink!!! Lloyds pharmacy sells them.

HTH

Forgot to say, it only got agonising when I forgot to wear my splints, I didn't forget often though!

Hello robin red, it sounds just like how mine started which then progressed to shooting pains in middle of night... i was referred to physio and have worn splints on both arms religiously every night for nearly 6 months now and although its not pleasant by any means ive just got used to it now...the splints worked a treat for ages and ages but now cos im so near to giving birth the pins and needles, numbness and pain are coming through during the day so i wear the splints then too...ask for splints or cold compress wrists before bedtime (although this wont stop it coming back in middle of night)...and make sure you're drinking your 2+ litres of water a day for the fluid retention phew thats it

I had this towards the end of pregnancy and it was CTS, just wore splints from physio overnight and it disappeared as soon as dd was born. Was never really painful, just very tingly and weak, only mentioned it to the physio as she was sorting out my back at the time!

Daisypops · 13/12/2006 22:11

Hi RRBK, it sounds like CPS, mine started like you describe. I am now 36 weeks and its still quite bad. I'm not in agony, just woken up with cold, numb, tingly hands. Picking the kettle up for my cuppa in a morning is hard work! Splints help as does running cold water over your wrists before bed. HTH x

Thankyou all very much for your posts. I was so hoping that it was just the way I was sleeping but have realised that now it starts almost as soon as I lie down.. my whole arm starts buzzing and my hands kind of sieze up. Cant wait til it starts to hurt too! Wow this pregnacy lark is such a barrel of laughs! cant wait for the stretch marks and piles!
