Accidentally ate chorizo - how worried should I be?

I just ate a Spanish omelette from the supermarket that I didn't realise had chorizo in it until half way through, so I didn't heat it up. I know uncooked chorizo is a no no, how much of a risk do you think I actually have? I know I've been far too worried so trying (somewhat unsuccessfully) to not freak out! What do you think?

In France you're advised to avoid salad unless you wash it yourself at home.

Peppaismyhomegirl · 10/12/2015 21:32

Don't panic. It really isn't that big of a deal. Read the French guidelines for pegnant women! They laughed me out of most resturants in Paris! Hmm

Can we eat pate and brie then? I'm really missing these at Christmas

dementedpixie · 10/12/2015 21:36

Still advised to avoid pate and soft cheeses like Brie. You can eat the cheeses if they have been cooked though.

superram · 10/12/2015 21:37

Brie yes as most is pasteurised anyway. Pate no as too much vitamin a (or something bad anyway).

dementedpixie · 10/12/2015 21:41

Even if Brie is pasteurised you are still supposed to avoid it whereas you can eat unpasteurised hard cheeses as they are dry and less likely to harbour listeria bacteria

PandaMummyofOne · 10/12/2015 21:57

Bugger me, you're not meant to eat it when pregnant?! I are it all the way through mine. Ooopppps.

You'll be fine. Honestly.

Runningupthathill82 · 10/12/2015 22:08

If you really want Brie, eat Brie. The risk is very small indeed. Have you ever had a listeria infection from eating brie before? Know anyone who has? It's extremely rare indeed.

From everything I've read, there is more risk in bagged salad, or indeed in rice from a takeaway, but those aren't on the "avoid" list. Indeed, there is more risk to your unborn child in walking across the road every single day.

It's about looking at the evidence behind the guidance and making up your own mind. There is no "right" and "wrong" thing to do, apart from in the obvious such as not smoking - where there really is evidence of harm.

jamtartandcustard · 10/12/2015 22:23

Well that's a new one on me. But then I've not paid any attention to what I can/can't eat. I've even been enjoying runny eggs and a glass of wine.
Dc4 here though, eldest is almost 12. It's insane how the "rules" have changed so much since I had her and she's turned out just fine so I take it all with a pinch of salt

Lilipot15 · 10/12/2015 22:28

Read up on the NHS guidelines so you can avoid this anxiety again and don't stress.

I would imagine that a lot of pregnant women have had panics over eating something they later learnt was not recommended. I certainly caused myself a moderately level of anxiety about what I now call "Parmagate" and also stressed about drinking water from taps in Croatia (?! Don't know why now).....

Congratulations on your pregnancy

I was pregnant in the UK, but traveling back and forth between there and the USA and Italy. The doctors in the USA were over the top about not eating sushi and any alcohol at all. The doctors in the UK advised no more than 2 drinks per DAY(!!!) and definitely no brie (or maybe it was the US doctors saying no Brie). And the italians just wanted me to eat eat eat.

ChicaMomma · 11/12/2015 11:32

I genuinely never knew Chorizo was on the verbotin list and have had it multiple times on both pregnancies- ooops!!

My doctor claims the only real worry is Paté- that almost everything else is fine- i still avoid sushi and things like blue cheese, but otherwise it's a carte blance really- i have runny eggs a few times a week. Although on my first pregnancy i was very anal about eggs being fully cooked!! second time around you really relax SO much!!

ChicaMomma · 11/12/2015 11:33

2 drinks a day sofia- i'm loving that idea!! that should get us through xmas!!!

I've really only be having about 2 a month! time to drink up ladies :)
