When I got preggers, I was told to keep doing what I enjoy doing - skiing, running etc etc. In the first trimester I felt too knackered and shocked to run, then I got round ligament pain for a few weeks and I've only just started up again.

Problem is......I know I should keep my heart rate reasonably low (

I was told not to run in pregnancy because your ligaments soften and you are more likely to damamge yourself as running is espcially hard on your joints. I also heard it's bad for your boobs - but I reackon this is an old wives tale! As long as your do UT2 (low intensity) excersise is fine - so I guess there is no real reason why you shouldn't run in terms of baby - just be careful of you!

Hi Highlander, I really enjoy running when not pregnant. Both last preg and this one I have had a complete aversion to the very idea and just been swimming/done yoga. So I think it is important to listen to your bod and just do what is comfy and feels right. Definitely don't think exercising till you're very tired is good right now - think it's better to keep it gentle. And don't forget rest is as important as exercise for you and the growing bub.

a good friend of mine cycled throughout her pregnancies, until her consultant told her off at around 8.5 mths (she does cycle to work on a very busy rd)

dinny - what sort of yoga do you do? Everyone seems to do it when pregnant and I really fancy having a go. Do you have to go to special classes?

Hmmm... I have only got compliments from consultants and midwives for cycling through my pregnancies.
I think pottering along is the right approach, Highlander. Exercise when pregnant shouldn't leave you feeling knackered, just pleasantly tired. When you get exhausted you release toxins into your blood stream that may have detrimental affect on the baby (nobody has done the research to be sure, but it's not an unreaonable assumption).

Today's update - went for run as normal and thought I wopuld try out the Paula Radcliffe recommendation of soaking the legs in the sea afterwards (or a stream as she does) to immediately reduce any inflammation. It was really nice....... until a bit of a wave caught me and I fell arse over tit and had to walk home soaking fortunately my flat is only 2 mins away!

Highlander, I have carried on with Sivananda yoga (which I normally do) and am also doing an antenatal yoga class. Think yoga really helped me in my first delivery - hoping it will again this time. D

Highlander, I ran every morning (only 10 minutes) when my morning sickness was at it's worst - which was v. bad. It worked wonders, however I hurt my back and have been very wary since. I am mega tired at the minute (13 weeks) and so am going to wait til I get to the full of energy and 'blooming' stage.

I guess the common sense approach is to do as much as your body tells you is ok. I am thinking of taking up speed walking instead with just one run a week. I subscribe to runners world, and someone in there said you can do all the fartlek (Fast-slow) and cross training while walking, giving less strain but still a great work out.

I really don't fancy sitting in a cold bath/sea/stream although some people really swear by it. I wonder if a minty or eucalyptus shower gel/moisturiser would do it (e.g. Wiccy wacky muscles rub out of Lush - which I have found great for problem muscles), as they would make your skin feel cold.

I've just seen this thread as I've been away on holiday. I'm on my third pregnancy and have run during all of them - babies completely fine. The advice from my doctor was to cut my distances and to not run up hills. Otherwise he was quite happy for me to carry on.
Pre-pregnancy I ran half-marathon distances but during all the pregnancies I only wanted to run about 30 minutes and towards the end stages would do bursts of walking as well. I took it all gently as well because of the ligament softening thing, wore a shock absorber sports bra, and had sorbathane insoles in my running shoes for extra support.
I loved running through pregnancy and felt it kept me in a really upbeat frame of mind. Good luck, is this your first pregnancy?
