MW appt this morning and I'm measuring 39 weeks at 35+6.

She said although I'm on the cusp (sp??) of it being risky for a HB this a baby is "a real chunk" at this stage.

TBH I;m not really bothered where it's born, but with 2 of my 3 prev labours being quick I'm not sure how it would work with a planned HB being suddenly changed to a hosp birth when I;m atually in labour.
Would I get there in time?? (althoygh thats the $64,000,000 question I suppose!!)
If he does get stuck how risky would it be being at home and trying to getto hosp?

would it be better to change to a hosp birth now and avoid the possible risky HB?

Ok...so now I'm thinking I don't want to be induced.

Bishops score:

before induction, your cervix is assessed of readiness for labour ..a score of 6+ indicates induction likely to work,

the length, thickness, dilation and position of the cervix, the station of the baby are all assessed .

LTH

Haven't read the thread fully, but you know I think that I had an 11lb-er 8w ago at 40+6. I had to fight bloody hard to get my HB and the consultant was talking about the baby getting stuck and shoulder dystocia. The baby's abdominal circumference was measured at 90-somethingth centile at 35 and 37w. But I'd birthed two large babies normally before and was certain that I would be able to do it again. And I'm quite broad in any case!

Once I went over 40w I did start finding out about induction and considering things like getting a sweep, but really didn't want to go down that route if poss. In the end ds2 was born naturally and was the easiest and most gentle of my three birhtings. That said, I distinctly remember the sensation of teh shoulders with each birth, and I could feel that ds2 wasn't about to slip out as easily. But out he came and with no problems.

11lb - OMG!!!

LTH - To induce or not induce - that is the question????

Off for scan today - trying to take the "stay cool approach" - let's hope everything is ok.

QuadropheniaonIce · 13/12/2006 13:42

There is a high chance that if your bishops score is low and your cervix isn't favourable they won't induce you anyway. As a mum who was induced due to size of baby i wouldn't recommned it, baby wasn't ready, it was long, very painful and due to it being early my ds just wasn't in the right position.

katierocket · 13/12/2006 16:28

That's interesting about the bishop's score, no one mentioned that when i was induced. Why is it called a bishop's score do you think?!

when lulu says this
"if you want to be free to move and be active. you will need to speak to the midwife and ensure that they will allow this as often induction leads to constant monitoring and drips"

I couldn't agree more - this was exactly what happened with me - not pleasant.

lulumama · 13/12/2006 16:43

don;t know why it is called bishops score..but this is what you are scored on!

be careful of agreeing to induction with a score of less than 6 !

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 13/12/2006 17:00

"a growth scan at this stage would be pretty pointless as the sacn couldn't show the whole baby"

Um... does your MW know what she's talking about?? Both my growth scans were at 38 weeks on consultant recommendation. All they do is measure the head and the abdoment and do some calculation to estimate the size. They don't need to see the whole baby at once!!

redbeki · 20/12/2006 22:34

my midwife thought my baby was big for my dates, and advised me not to have a homebirth.I then had a scan and was told babe was at least 9lb 8oz at 37 wks.I decided not to go for my longed H.Birth, and how wrong they were! she was 7lb 13oz at 39 wks at hospital.very annoyed at this.(angry)

satine · 20/12/2006 22:38

Sorry, haven't had time to read every post but I'd say go for a home birth, as long as you aren't hours from a hospital just in case. Even big babies can be delivered fine without intervention, and yours might not be big after all.
My midwife over estimated the weight of my baby by nearly 3lbs, at the last visit before my dd was born. I wish now that I'd gone for a home birth!

imdreamingofawhiteKITTYmas · 20/12/2006 22:41

Mws told me DD2 would be about 7.5-8lbs max so when she popped out at 9lbs 3ozs it was a shock (especially after 6lbs 3oz DD1). Homebirth was really straight forwards I only had a slight graze too recovered very quickly from the birth too.

merrylissiemas · 20/12/2006 22:44

if you want something then push for it. its your birth, not theirs. with ds i asked for an elective cs coz he was so big (9lb2) and i'm so tiny 5"2 and size6, she said no and i ended up with an ecs which was sooo traumatic. wish i'd had the guts to fight my corner, you don't want to regret this

Lady I wouldn't recomend being induced, my stats:

dd1, induced at 7 days over took 36 hours from first lot of gel weighed 7lb 6oz

dd2, induced at 16 days over had been getting contraction type pains, took 10 hours from first lot of gel wegihed 10lb 6

dd3, induced at term due to my instance, spd, depression, large baby etc etc took 32 hours and nearly had a failed induction - they were saying 50/50 when they broke my waters (was I scared or what!)9lb 2

dd4, induced at 14 days over, bishops score, 6 hours after gel (in pain during this time btw) bishops score still 1 (!), next lot of gel had her 3 hours later went from 8 cm to delivered in three contractions weighed 9lb 12

Mine like to be fully cooked, my last birth was fantastic the first three were awful I wouldn't recommend an induction unless necessary. I thought #3 would arrive same day - 10 hours like the previous one but it didn't work out like that so all my plans went to pieces anyway!

Dont know how they can tell anything without a scan, i measured only just 38 weeks the day before i went into labour at 40 weeks, he was 8.5.

BuffysMum · 20/12/2006 23:00

Also wanted to add I measured 39 at term plus 16 with my 10lb 6ozer and I'm only 5'1" and she came out just fine, very painful labour though despite the epidural but that was the stress of being in there I think!
