Pistachio Nuts?

BIBIBOO · 17/05/2004 13:55

I have just munched through a whole bag of pistachio nuts and a colleague has only just thought to tell me that I can't eat them when I'm pregnant - is this right? I have been avoiding peanuts like a good pregnant lady, but thought these were okay... ADVICE???

As far as I know they are fine! Only peanuts and that's the allergy thing (plus, they aren't really nuts as dp explained to me once, but I still love him).

While we are here - what about sorbet? I have half an idea we can't do that - anyone?!!!
And Dairylea - someone told me that was wrong too, but I REALLY fancied some today. Again?!!

Arghhhh!!!

As far as I know it's just peanuts, and even then only if you've got a history of asthma, eczema or nut allergy in your family.
Other nuts are meant to be pretty good for you I think.

Pidge · 17/05/2004 14:08

Peanuts are the only nut that is officially "banned".

I am allergic to walnuts and pecans and have a whole set of atopic tendencies with eczema, asthma, rhinitis etc so I was pretty paranoid about nuts during pregnancy. But I developed an absolute craving for pistachios round about the 5 month mark and ate a bag a day for about a week before I thought that maybe I shouldn't be doing it and stopped. My dd is now 21 months and hasn't had any nuts yet, so time will tell!

Dairylea is absolutely fine. All cheese is fine except a/mould-ripened cheeses such as brie and camembert b/blue cheeses (ie Roquefort), and soft unpastaurised GOAT's cheese. All other kinds of cheese - hard cheese of every kind (inc unpasteurised and goats), cream cheeses etc are all fine and healthy.

beansprout · 17/05/2004 14:43

Thanks Aloha, that's what I hoped (she says, 3 Dairylea triangles later).

Does anyone know about the sorbet, which I am convinced I made up, but just want to be reassured. I may not be able to hold out much longer....!

aloha · 17/05/2004 14:53

Does the sorbet contain raw, unpasteurised egg? If so then you might be concerned about salmonella food poisoning. I personally wouldn't be, but it is up to you. I am sure that a commercially available sorbet, if it contains egg, contains pasteurised egg which is fine. Pistachio nuts fine too.

AlanP · 17/05/2004 14:56

Sorbets don't normally contain any egg product so you should be OK

aloha · 17/05/2004 14:57

AlanP - mine do.

Oh No. Camembert & Brie. I don't believe it. I'm off to France next month on hols and the biggest attracting is the cheese and bread (no wine for me this time). Absolutely gutted if I can't eat these cheeses, or any of the other cheeses along that line in France. Boo hoo.

BIBIBOO · 21/05/2004 11:33

But you can indulge in chocolate croissants, garlic in everything and plenty of hot chocolate! mmmmmm, all is not lost! Wish I was going now

Brie and camembert are more likely to infected with listeria, sorry. But you can eat lots of cheese - all hard cheese except blue ones, lovely garlicky cream cheeses like Boursin.. yummy.

PotPourri · 21/05/2004 14:53

Boo hoo still. But point taken. I will enjoy the pain au chocolat and nice cheeses like Boursin, St. Moret, Bonbel etc. In fact, just plain butter on baguettes is lovely so I will just stick to that (ooooh and french onion soup).

All I ate for the first 6 weeks of pg was peanut butter sandwiches until someone told me I shouldn't - oops. Everything semed OK though so I ate them all the way through pg number 2 as well. Probably not the advice you need Bibiboo - sorry
