Do/did you exercise during your pregnancy?

Hello Mumsnetters!

All over the internet, people are singing the praises of a consistent exercise routine. Whenever I browse the web for pregnancy tips, exercise advice seems to pop up quite regularly (next to folic acid intake).

There are so many benefits for both expecting and non-expecting women (and men). Maintaining a healthy heart, keeping our serotonin levels high and getting the bowels moving when constipated are just a few of the massive differences it can make to your daily life - as well as keeping you lean and feeling sexy.

It's easy enough to natter about, but lets face it, in this age of convenience fast-food, sedentary office jobs and busy schedules, keeping your fitness up can be challenging. Even more so if you have never even seen the inside of a gym.

I'd really like to know what the expecting ladies in this community do to keep fit during the 9 months when your body wants you to do nothing more than lie on the sofa, and eat whatever the cravings tell you to eat, whilst wondering when Luke Skywalker will arrive and order you to hand over the Wookie and Han Solo.

I'm 25, and I'm now roughly 9 weeks LMP (first pregnancy). I'm actually a dedicated runner and have been running for a good 5 years now consistently. My personal best for a 5k jog is 23.5 minutes and the farthest I have ran is a half marathon. I run roughly 3-5 times a week for at least 20 minutes. I love running because it makes me feel happy and sexy. It's also a brilliant way to clear your head and problem-solve when something particularly confounding is getting to you. I think that keeping in shape (as well as eating really healthily) is important and I want to be a good, healthy role-model for my child. But I have to admit ladies, it's getting difficult. I don't want to lose my fitness, but I also don't want to accidentally cause any problems for myself during pregnancy.

So here's my questions to you lovely lot!

Do you have a particular routine? Or is their a certain exercise that you think would be more suited to an expecting mother?

Do you use any exercise aids? (Like those bog, squishy balls I've seen some women rolling their bums on)?

Do you find it beneficial to exercise in a group, with your other half or go at it alone?

Do you think that there are some exercises that should be avoided like the plague?

Do you think that pregnant women should avoid exercise completely and focus on the pregnancy first, and then get their fitness back after the birth?

What do you do when your body doesn't want to let you stick to your routine? Do you go for it anyway, or do you bypass the treadmill and beeline for the kitchen?

Do you find it easier to exercise at certain times of the day?

Currently doing FA due to 1st trimester knackeredness and nausea, it's not conducive to exercise at all! Maybe in a few weeks I will get off my arse the sofa and go for a decent walk.

@spilttheteaagain - The sofa feels sooo goood at the moment, doesn't it? I barely ever used it before I got pregnant. I was always happy to sit on the carpet, but now the sofa is my best friend ;)

KeyboardMum is currently out running, today she's feeling much better, maybe because we've moved the majority of our crap to the new place!

32 weeks. Have been doing quite a lot of exercise and I feel bloody great for it.

I take the dog for a brisk walk twice a day - about 2-3 miles a day, more on weekends.

I practice yoga almost every day. I have a home yoga practice - I do the advanced sequences from the Iyengar Yoga for Motherhood book, which has been so helpful. I've also been doing my regular Iyengar classes and one vinyasa class a week - still doing headstand and everything, which has surprised me a little. I really didn't think I'd be up to it at this stage! However, I've been practicing for a very long time, so have had the strength and flexibility to keep this up - I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to everyone. Have recently added some pregnancy yoga classes in as the third trimester progresses. I quite like the group dynamic of the pregnancy classes - a sense that all us preggos are in it together.

As far as yoga goes, there are definitely certain asanas that should be avoided - deep backbends, twists, forward bends. You could do yourself some serious damage if you didn't know the modifications. I also do a restorative sequence if I'm just too knackered on the day - pregnancy isn't the time to push yourself to the limit.

Swimming has also been great, when I find the time to do it. I went through an insomnia phase a few weeks back and found lap swimming really helped me to sleep through the night.

KeyboardMum - Front crawl and drills to improve my technique, with generally around 100-150m of backstroke at the end of a session to help unwind my shoulders a little. I don't swim breaststroke at all.

I just carried on with my normal routine, taking it easier as I found it harder. I do jogging, cycling, yoga and walking but no strict pattern apart from the bike which is for commuting. I think you can over think these things. Labour is hard work so of course it makes sense that being in shape will help, but if you have an easy 4h birth you'd probably cope almost as well being a bit less fit than normal and if you have a 40h labour no amount of exercise can counter the exhaustion!

@glitterbomb80 - It sounds like you have a really good balance of exercises on the go, and you're still going for it well in your 3rd trimester, that's brilliant!! How on earth are you managing to headstand with the extra baby weight? I'm really impressed. I have to admit that, although the group support is probably really important, I doubt I'll do any pregnancy yoga. I've had a go at it in the past and found the slowness of it to be infuriating, I like to feel my heart pumping. But if I do take it up, I'll take your advice on board.

@TriJo - Good point about the backstroke. I might give the front crawl a go next time I'm in the pool.

@badg3r - I think that you are right about over-thinking it. When I found out I was pregnant, I modified my routine a little and attempted to get the same amount of exercise done, only to become frustrated at how much harder everything was becoming. Then I realised that I don't have to strictly keep to the routine, because some days it's just not a realistic expectation to put on yourself.

I've kept up my weekly PT sessions and have switched to spinning rather than the weights I was doing. Really enjoying being more active this time. DS1 I was very unfit and put a ridiculous amount of weight on. Gone into pregnancy overweight this time so very panicked about getting even bigger than last time. I'm sure my weight contributed to my depression post birth. So exercise is very important to me this time round.

I'm 3 weeks on the other side now.....
During my pregnancy I carried on more or less as I had been before. 'Metabolic' type hiit group training once a week until 35 weeks and vinyasa yoga until 34/5weeks (I had a very experienced yogie and had to do some alternatives to twists/back bends, but also still managing headstand). I was weight training with a pt until about 18 weeks. As time went on I just reduced weights/intensity depending on how I was feeling....After this I swam (comob breastroke and crawl, found backstroke impossible with a bump!) and did more gentle yoga, up until I delivered at 38 +5.
I generally felt energised throughout my pregnancy (I know this is not the experience everyone has) and reading this back some may say I was doing too much, but it never felt like I was pushing myself too far.
I had a really 'good' labour and have recovered really quickly, which I'm putting down to being in shape before I got pregnant and keeping active during.

I went to the gym till 8th m, of course, doc knew and controlled. Also I informed the manager of the gym.
