Worried sick and feeling so stupid

I've done something so stupid and I'm making myself sick with worry.

I'm 20 weeks pregnant with my second baby and yesterday went to a family function in a pub restaurant. It was a set meal of roast beef and was served very pink, I would say medium rare. Foolishly I ate it.

I'm now completely and utterly terrified that my baby will be born with congenital toxoplasmosis. I am worried sick and can't believe I was so foolish as to put my baby at risk like that.

I know toxoplasmosis is uncommon, but it can cause severe problems which may only become apparent much later in the child's life, even up to adulthood. I will spend every moment of my child's life waiting for symptoms to appear. I feel so terrible about this.

Please don't. A one-off family meal like this won't hurt your baby. Other countries have much less stringent rules around what pregnant women can eat - pate, soft cheese etc. One roast beef dinner will not cause problems for your baby, even medium rare.

Promise. Smile

Thank you for your kind words and reassurance, International. I had a miscarriage in April, so am a bit more anxious this time.

My worry isn't helped by the fact that yesterday's starter in the restaurant was a pigeon dish, and I accidentally swallowed a piece of lead shot in mine. It was not a good meal all round really. I'm not sure which bit I'm most worried about - toxoplasmosis risk or lead poisoning risk. I've got myself in a right state over it all.

I ate rare-ish meat at around 24 weeks pregnant and my midwife offered a toxoplasmosis blood test. Have a chat with yours at your next appointment if you'd like to get tested for reassurance. Risk of contracting it is very low, try not to panic.

Toxoplasmosis is rare and you are unlikely to get it from beef. I seriously think you have nothing to worry about. If it's making you that anxious though then speak to your MW x

Pollyputhtekettleon · 16/11/2015 15:11

I wouldn't give that a second though, let alone worry.
