they are great , unless you are going to walk around with it clamped to your ear permanently when the baby sleeps !!!!!!

video ones a bit ott IMO..why not just sit with the baby all night !?!

i have one...can;t remember which, think it is a BT one???? digital, plays music and has a little night light....can operate it from the parent unit ,so can switch on music / lights or switch them off without going in the baby's room....

didn;t have one with DS as much smaller house and would have heard him cry wherever i was , but now we do need one or would not hear DD if we were in the kitchen and she was in bed..so it is necessary.

I have a Tomy Walkabout advance - bought it second hand 3 years ago for £10.

It does the job well, it's nothing fancy though it does have a detachable bit on the listening station so you can take it with you if you move around the house, which I find very useful.

NattyandThomasandBump · 07/12/2006 21:05

DO NOT buy the cheap one in argos.. think it was fisher price but not sure. was around 17 quid when i bought it. the signal is dreadful, it buzzes constantly and every night i am sooooo close to throwing it out the window!!

paulaplumpbottom · 07/12/2006 21:09

We have had our TOMY for three years and it still works perfectly.

MammyMto3kids · 07/12/2006 21:22

I couldn't sleep without my motion sensor one, it's a tommee tipee one and it's great! costs about £100 but it's cheaper in Argos, we got ours at Mothercare for £79.99 (gift!)

TheBlonde · 07/12/2006 21:24

We have the BT one
Make sure you buy one which uses a digital signal otherwise you risk listening to other babies crying

dont waste your money..
if the baby needs you , he will scream loud enough. unless you live in buckingham palace, in which case you should have an army of nannies.
sometimes babies make little noises which can be amplified by the monitor and ruin what sleep you may be getting. a healthy child will let you know when he or she needs you.
a sick child, i wooultn leave them on their own in a room anyways.
if you must go down to the end of the garden and do gardening for two hours, then take the baby with you in pram. what if the cat jumped on the monitor, destroyed its reception etc, and then jumped on bby? whilst youre happily weeding awy thining baby is having a nice sleep?

save the money. or spend it on something a bit more useful

paulaplumpbottom · 07/12/2006 21:32

Its worth it for the peace of mind.

Have you thought about walkie talkies that have a baby monitor function? That is what I am going to buy this time. We got given an old one for our first which conked out. The walkie talkies have a massive range - 3 or so miles. Not that you are going to go that far away but will be useful when child is older rather than something you just use for a few months.

Tomy Classic Advance (£40) is the best one imo.
no need to buy anything more fancy.

twickersmum · 08/12/2006 11:10

and while i agree with partybabestitch a bit, i can usually hear them without needing a monitor (don't have it on during the night), if you are watching a film or have friends over and need to shut the door downstairs, then it is great to have the monitor.

cocopop · 08/12/2006 22:01

We have just bought a video monitor from Woolworths, with two cameras (1 for 20 month old ds and 1 for newborn) it only cost £60!!

I know some people think it's OTT but we think it's great.

Our ds has just recently made the transition to a bed and it's a lot easier being able to see what he's up to now that he can roam free if he feels like it.

When he was a baby I had a Tomy walkabout monitor but found that with every little noise I heard I was up and down the stairs checking on him. With a video monitor I can see if my newborn ds is awake or not and don't need to trouble myself with climbing the stairs every 5 minutes!! The monitor switches between the 2 cameras every 15 seconds. Honestly, I think that this was such a good buy!!!

cocopop · 09/12/2006 08:09

Meant to say that you can also get a monitor and 1 camera for about £40 if you don't need 2 cameras.

YeahBut · 09/12/2006 08:19

Don't do it!!!!
On baby number 3 now and we didn't bother with a monitor this time. He's by far the better sleeper because we're not running into his room every time he squeaks. Unless you live in a house with your bedroom in the west wing and baby in the east wing, he'll shout loud enough for you to hear him if he needs you.

mrschaff · 09/12/2006 08:24

I like the idea of a video monitor. We sleep on a different floor to the kids so when ou youngest goes in her own room it will be a must.Does it pick up the sound as well as ordinary monitors?

lorie · 09/12/2006 19:23

mrschaff, hi. We have been bought a video monitor from boots. It was expensive (£90 I think) but with a boots parenting card you get £15 worth of points back!.

We have had quick a play with it and the picture and sound seems to be very good.

Orchide · 11/12/2006 18:29

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.
We will have one on our 'to buy' list, now its just a case of choosing which one!
Do they have this kind of thing at the baby show? Woul dbe good to see a number together to compare.
