Will the consultant not try to turn it? I had an ECV at around 38 weeks, don't know how long I would have been allowed to go on if the ECV didn't work. What are you planning to do for the birth if it is still breech? I think if you are having a planned c-section they generally bring you in a bit early so that you haven't already gone into labour.

MerryBiglipsmas · 07/12/2006 14:45

its not me whos pg but but my friend

She is going in at 38 weeks pg to try and turn it around but doesnt want to have an emergency c-section so i did asked her what about elective c-section as she will be able to recover quicker. She had got a 26m old dd too. (ive had an emergency c-section 26m ago myself and i know what its like after you've had it)

some midwives are skilled at delivering breech babies

MerryBiglipsmas · 07/12/2006 14:45

she is gonna need to discuss it with her midwife of the options

(her first birth was natural)

she is just hoping she doesnt go in before her full term date (due to Xmas) but ive said that "There is nothing you can do really unless the baby does turn"

I would guess that if the ECV fails and the baby is not in any distress after the attempt the doctor will arrange for her to come in for a planned c-section a few days later (unless she is very brave and wants to try for a natural birth !)

The ECV is more likely to be successful when it's not the first pregnancy, so hopefully it will work for her.

A vaginal delivery depends on the circumstances.

They will probably do ultrasounds to monitor the position.
If the baby is frank breech (butt first), between 6-8 lbs, and the head is not hyperextended, than it is possible,, but I think it depends on how comfortable the practitioner is with the delivery.

If the foot is first, they will do a C-section.

The head is hyperextended when you tilt your head back to touch your back.

Ideally for a breech birth you would want the baby in a typical fetal position with the chin towards the chest.

I'm no expert, just pregnant and over reading my books.

MKGnearlyimmaculateconception · 07/12/2006 15:06

I've read that simple visualization can also help the baby change positions.

MerryBiglipsmas · 07/12/2006 15:06

ooh righto! thanks and congrats xx

Not much help as others have already said they will probably give her a c section date...on the other hand when I was having DD last year there was a lady who gave birth to her daughter who was breech but nobody knew. Believe me from hearing her in labour and seeing her on the ward after if that is the effect of having a breech baby I would gladly take the c section.

MerryBiglipsmas · 07/12/2006 15:10

if the baby doesnt turn..wil she have to go in early than expected?

OP posts:
Nemoinapeartree · 07/12/2006 15:13

think they tend to take you in earlier to stop you going into labour naturally.

MerryBiglipsmas · 07/12/2006 15:14

oh dear dont think she be too happy about that!

OP posts:
MerryBiglipsmas · 07/12/2006 15:17

so when the docs/midwives try and turn the baby...will it be there and then that it be successful? as i know that u can have a normal pg and on the last minute it goes into the breech position - scary!!

OP posts:
Nemoinapeartree · 07/12/2006 15:20

the baby can move back but with a EVC basically they scan as they turn to make sure nothing untoward happens. She may be lucky and the baby might have turned as that happened to my friend last year.

MKGnearlyimmaculateconception · 07/12/2006 15:23

From what I know about EVC, it's done in the hospital, so they may start an induction right away to ensure that the baby doesn't move back into the breech position.

MerryBiglipsmas · 07/12/2006 15:26

i did say to my friend that its still early days anyway
