Cramps and bleeding, Week 11

Hello all,

I'm ca. eleven-and-a-half weeks into my first pregnancy. I've had light bleeding on and off due to what has now been diagnosed as a bicorunate uterus, and I've been to the Early Pregnancy Unit three times for scans, which were thankfully all fine. I was told that due to my bicorunate uterus, my bleeding would likely continue for a while yet.

However, since yesterday, I've been having quite bad cramps and the bleeding has got more as well as more red in colour. I'm quite worried as the cramps are just like period pains and so bad that I didn't sleep much.

It's currently the time around when my third period since having become pregnant would have been due (My periods aren't all that regular, so difficult to say whether it would have been due yesterday-ish or not.).

I have read that having some bleeding at the time when one would normally have one's first period was normal. However, what about the third period? And what about the period pain? As the blood seems different from what I've had so far, I'm not sure it is related to the bicorunate uterus...

I'd be grateful for any advice - thank you.

I understand the issue with your uterus but if you're bleeding is worse and also the cramps are becoming worse I would contact the early pregnancy unit at your hospital. I hope everything is okay and it's probably due to your uterus but best to be cheched

Chloeisobelle21, thank you very much for your reply.

I was really worried this morning and the Early Pregnancy Unit wasn't open yet, but in the meantime, I have managed to get through to them.

They said that whilst there wasn't much research on women with bicorunate uteruses during pregnancy, it might well be that one half of my womb (the one without a baby in it) was experiencing a 'normal' period, and that this might continue every time my period was due throughout the pregnancy, too.

So, whilst I'm still a bit worried, I'm far less worried than last night/this morning. Smile

Oh that's great, so they wasn't worried then? What a shame, that's one of the nice things about being pregnant, the fact you don't need to worry about periods. :)

They said that at this stage, I wouldn't be miscarrying without noticing it - they said if there were big clots or if the pain was worse than period pain (I do get very painful periods, so it being as painful right now might just be that.), I should call them again. Also if this lasted for longer than 4-5 days. However, otherwise, they said chances were it was just a (half-uterus) period.

I'm still a bit worried that the other half of my womb (with the baby in it) might decide to join in in the period, but at least it was some re-assurance!

Thanks for your thought, Chloeisobelle.

Also, I've just realised that I've mis-spelled it all the time: it's bicornuate uterus, not bicorunate uterus (The nurse had spelled it the latter way and I had never looked it up yet.)!

Maybe if your worried as to be seen? I'm sure they wouldn't mind if it puts your mind at rest. You should get extra support with this as you're having bleeding. I'm 14 weeks and still get the odd day where I have cramps, is this your first baby?

Augustina123 · 02/11/2015 15:51

Thanks again, Chloe!

Yes, my first pregnancy, and I'm quite old for it already (37), so I'm aware of the increased risks that would come with it even if it wasn't for the bicornuate uterus.

I've spent most of the day in bed with a hot water bottle - the cramps and bleeding are still the same, but as the nurse at the EPU had said that it might well continue for another 2-3 days, I'm trying not to stress too much. Luckily, my line manager is very understanding about me missing work.

That's okay, ah that's lovely, I'm on my second and I'm 25. Still just as scared as I was the first time though. The nurse sounds really supportive and best thing to do is just relax even though that's hard I know! But your in good hands, if they were worried they would see you straight away!
That's really good, best thing is to rest and enjoy growing your baby, it's such an amazing exciting time. Wish you all the best for the next few months Smile

Thanks again, Chloe!

Yes, the nurses at the EPU were all lovely and never made me feel like I was calling unnecessarily (done so twice now over last few weeks), so I really hope that all will be well.

Wishing you all the very best, too! Must be hard to deal with all these pregnancy worries when you have another one to look after...
