Painful hips

Wondering if anyone else has this. I'm 21 weeks and when I go to bed at night my hip bones are absolutely killing me. And if I dare stretch or flex my legs it feels like I've dislocated them. The pain carries on for a couple hours during the morning then it back to normal then picks up again when I go to bed. I already use a pregnancy pillow which doesn't help

I would ask your midwife about physio or see an osteopath/chiropractor (not really sure of the difference). I started with pain in my groin/pelvic area about the same time as you and it hasn't really gone away, am 36 weeks now. I did go to a hospital physio session and she basically just said to keep the pelvic girdle straight at all times ie legs together etc. But I wish I'd got sorted with some actual hands on treatment sooner. I started seeing an osteopath a couple of weeks ago and it has helped with the lower back pain (my spine was all jammed together) but the stabbing pain in the groin is still there.

It's not cheap and it hurts (certainly no wishy washy 'pregnancy massage') but I think it will help keep things freer and moving for labour & birth. I can only wonder whether it would have been better if I'd gone earlier (although at £40 per session maybe I'd be bankrupt by now if I'd started in week 20!)

But do someone to look at it, sooner rather than later. Don't just plough on like I did, you are only going to add weight to your hips so you might as well get some treatment to stop it getting any worse now.

It's horrible isn't it. I had an array of pillows arranged to make me comfortable, pillow in the car for driving! I got some physio at around 22weeks and kept up the exercises she gave me all the way through and it really helped.

I really suffered with this in pregnancy too. The gp was very little help.. diagnosed me with spd and basically said 'that's life!'

I was nearly signed off work with it at 28 weeks but what saved me was an appointment with a physio who specialised in pregnancy related issues. She 'fixed' me in 2 sessions! If you want any more info pm me and I will send you more info. ..I'm in Yorkshire but I'm sure there are similar places all over. If it actually had been spd I probably wouldn't have been fixable but it turned out I actually has a groin strain which has affected my pelvis. My pelvis was pain free for rest of my pregnancy. Though my hips still hurt at night

Also invest in one of those memory foam matress toppers...they are often on sale on amazon and it was a life saver. Get the thickest one its like sleeping in a cloud and massively takes the pressure off your hips.

I feel for you it was horrible but if it makes you feel better all my symptoms vanished straight after birth which Is common I think

Thank you all for your advice, I've got my scan on Tuesday and I'll mention it to my midwife. The topper idea sounds good to

Hi scarlet, could I ask you to pm met he name of the Yorkshire physio? I had shocking spd this pregnancy and I'd like to see someone hands on next time I'm back in the uk!

I could have written your post. I'm almost 36 weeks and the last month or two has been an agony. As you say, horrendous hip pain through the night and in the morning, then gets gradually better after couple of hours. For me, turning from one side to the other or getting out of bed is the worst. I've tried pillows between the legs but nothing helped. So I'm just living with it Confused Not long to go. You have my sympathies!

I'm awake with it now and I'm almost crying. I'm only 11+4 but I know it can start earlier if you have existing hip/pelvic problems (I have arthritis in my hips) . I'm seeing my consultant on Friday so hopefully they can help a bit. I would go see Gp before then if I hadn't just found out that the only good one in our village practice has just left!

Mine really hurt at night too, but its more of an ache than a sharp pain. However it means I wake 20 times per night to turn over, wake up when that hip hurts too much, back onto the other and so on and so forth. No pain at all during the day! My theory is that there's just too much weight on each hip at night, but maybe it's SPD.... foam topper sounds worth a try....
