Does having a coil count as cervical surgery?

Just that really. I know the cervix is cranked open to insert the coil but wasn't sure if that was classed as surgery. Was reading a separate thread about cerclage and didn't want to jump on there with my random questions but was wondering why a doctor would recommend a scan to measure the cervix? Looked it up online and read that one reason is when previous cervical surgery has occurred. I've had a coil fitted in the past but didn't tell the midwife during my booking in appointment as I didn't think of it as surgery. Should I have? Now worrying about cervical incompetence is something I've added to the list of things keeping me awake at night (currently 18 weeks, first pregnancy). Any opinions would be appreciated.

I Can't imagine it would ever be considered cervical surgery. They mean things like the procedures that are carried out after an abnormal smear result. These can shorten the cervix.

A coil is absolutely not cervical surgery.

I've had a lletz procedure where they burn away part of the cervix to get rid of cells plus a cone biopsy where they take a cone shaped piece from your cervix.

I've also had 2 x ERPCs for miscarriages where they force the cervix open

I'm. 25 weeks pregnant and had several cervical scans to make sure cervix isn't shortening and it's still at 4cm - despite all my surgery. The danger zone is 2.5cm

You have absolutely nothing to worry about with a coil

No, they mean biopsy or lazer ablation due to abnormal smear, and lots of health authorities don't even scan then, you have to have 2 or more treatments or a suspected issue (I'm in one of those areas).

No. It's not surgery and it will not have any impact on the integrity of your cervix.

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the responses and I'm glad to know I'm being daft and it's nothing to worry about. Smile Once again mind going into overdrive for no reason.

Brummiegirl, sorry to hear of the issues you've had in the past, thanks for taking the time to share your experience, and congrats on your pregnancy!
