low lying placenta

I'm 21 weeks and I've just got back from having my scan, baby is all good but she said I have a low lying placenta and I'll have to go back for another scan at 32 weeks! The sonography was very serious and said 'well, if the placenta doesn't move you'll have to have a c-section... Bye' his is my 3rd child and I've (touch wood) had easy births before and was planning on having this bubba at home, I'm really worried that now the whole thought has been thrown upside down Confused. Is there a chance my placenta will move? Is it more common then want I think? I'm really worried but on the upside I know bubbas all good but cared of having a c-section!

Hi op, mine moved up between 34 and 36 weeks. I think the chances are yours will move up too.

Junosmum · 14/10/2015 12:36

90% move up. I was also told this at my anomaly scan and have one at 32 weeks. It's looking like mine hasn't moved as I had a bleed at the weekend, which can be a side effect of low placenta.

Stepawayfromthezebras · 14/10/2015 12:37

I'm currently 23 + 6 and had the same at my 20 week scan so also have a 32 week scan booked. Dr Google and my midwife have both said it's most likely it'll move away from my cervix as the uterus expands. And since I had my scan I've heard of loads of friends of friends who had to have a 32 week scan and the placenta had moved. I think actual placenta previa rates are about 1 in 200 or something equally low.

Fingers crossed for you Smile

Mine moved too! But I went through whole NCT class assuming I'd be having a c section and was quite shocked at going into labour at 36 weeks when I hadn't taken notes! I think 'most' move and that's why they rescan you. Good luck!

I had the same thing and they really worried me with all the serious faces and threats of c section. Mine moved at the last minute at 36 weeks and I had a natural labour.

I've heard of this happening with quite a few people, the placenta can often 'move' up as the baby gets bigger, a bit like a fixed point on a balloon moving as it's blown up!! Grin

Fingers crossed you'll be fine, try not to worry as chances are it will move

Aww thanks for the reassurance ladies, I literally come out of there thinking, "I knew my luck was gonna run out eventually, how can I have two healthy babies and good births and expect it again?' But that's my constant fear and anxiety talking! X

Well over 90% of them detected at 20 weeks move up. You'll have another scan at 32 and maybe one after that if it's borderline. There's really nothing you can do but the odds are on your side.

I was one of the 10% where it didn't move and I had to have a section. My placenta was anterior as well so they had to go through part of it. The surgical team did a great job and got him out with minimal blood loss. I'm 9 days post section and feeling pretty good :)

Skiptonlass · 14/10/2015 13:41

Forgot to say - I was lucky and had no bleeds at all but if you do bleed, it's absolutely vital that you get medical attention immediately.

My view on it was meh, bummer about missing a natural birth but thank goodness we live in a time and place where it is detected and dealt with.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 14/10/2015 14:28

As others have said, 90% move up between now and 32 weeks if posterior. The number is lower but odds still on your side if anterior - but I think that's because of scared uterus / previous c sections etc.

Mine was a rare case in that it moved to the NHS's 2cm clear at 32 weeks but moved back down again. Very rare though but just luck of the draw I guess.

I would say to pack an overnight bag. If you bleed they will keep you in at least one night typically. Although this depends on size of bleed, gestation and how near the hospital you are. Again, you probably won't bleed (it'll say on your notes how near the placenta is) but it's nice to have your own stuff if you're kept in.

I understand about the c section fear too but try to see it as a means to an end. They'll only do it if it safest thing for you and baby. Good luck

Hi I was told my placenta was low when i went in for my 20 week skan they rebooked me in for a 34 week check up to see if it had moved and it had completely moved up the top it is worrying when told the possible outcome if it doesnt move. Hopefully yours moves too. For me baby is now breech so c section is still possible.. Main thing is baby is healty. Good luck i hope you get a good result x

anastasiakrupnik · 14/10/2015 15:24

Mine moved too. On the plus side, you get to have another scan and see your baby again. I quite liked that bit, espec as it was hiding for my 20week one.

HellKitty · 14/10/2015 15:28

I was told I'd have to have a section but mine moved too! Seems really common.
