Hello Girls, would you say the below is enough maternity clothes? Bearing in mind they will get used for a couple of months after birth also.

3 bras (black, white, nude)
9 pants (black, white, nude)
3 tights
2 leggings
3 long vests
3 t shirts
1 comfy jogging suit
1 pair jeans
2 cardigans
3 work dresses
1 work trousers
1 work blouse
1 nice dress

Did you buy maternity pjs or jacket?

Hi,

That's a good list to me. I didn't get pj's last time. I got a set of nighties from m and s in a dark colour two sizes up from normal. One is strappy and the other is button through so they can be worn together or separately and the button through one did as a dressing gown in hospital and I sometimes wore leggings underneath.

I was pg in a different season before and haven't bought a jacket yet but I'm not in the UK and our winter is only really 2 months. I have no idea if I'm going to need one yet I have scarves and big cardigans and a coat from when I was bigger anyway and I'm hoping that will do.

I wouldn't get pj's and a jogging suit but either or would be useful.

I wouldn't get pyjamas and I didn't need new pants either. Buy the bare minimum number of bras (two max in any one size) as your size will most likely change very often.

Do you really need cardigans? I'm still wearing my ordinary ones, unfastened. Same for vests, just wearing longer ones, as they stretch, and my jogging bottoms from pre-pregnancy days still fit too, if I wear them sitting on my hips.

That said, I'm on a strict budget so am only buying the necessities. Which is why I'm doubly annoyed that the maternity work trousers I bought at 8 weeks now no longer fasten at 25 weeks - I can't afford new ones!

cloudjumper · 13/10/2015 15:09

I started with 1 pair of jeans, but ended up buying more - but I don't wear leggings, so needed something else. Remember that once you finish work, you're probably not going to wear your work mat clothes anymore, which will drastically reduce your wardrobe.

I didn't buy maternity PJs, but got really big ones from TK Maxx instead. Same for the jogging suit (all my slouchy clothes for wearing around the house are stretchy enough anyway). Didn't buy any cardigans.

I also wouldn't buy everything at once, but just the stuff you need at the moment, and then get more when you need it. Like with normal clothes, it really depends on your shape and size which brand fits best. Or what you like/don't like - for example, I discovered that I really don't get on with under-the-bump trousers/skirts!
And like running said - it is perfectly possible to outgrow maternity clothes, that has happened to me as well!
I also wore my mat clothes a lot longer than just a few months after birth...
Bought quite a few things second hand, which made a big difference financially.

I found that as my bump got bigger my usual maternity leggings (size 10) grew very uncomfortable so I ended up having to buy a few new ones in a larger size. This didn't happen during my first pregnancy though so guess it depends.

Also agree you don't really need maternity cardigans. Normal ones unbuttoned are usually fine.

Also consider just getting non-maternity clothes a bit bigger than your usual size. I got a few normal tops from Peacocks in a larger size and they were perfect.

acquiescence · 13/10/2015 15:40

Definitely get some new pjs, but in a bigger size rather than maternity. I am usually a size 10 and bought size 16 and 18 pj bottoms which are still fitting well at the end of my pregnancy. I also bought a massive size 18 hoodie which is great for being inside.

acquiescence · 13/10/2015 15:41

I have stayed in my size 10/12 knickers throughout, as ibahvwnt really put on weight apart from massive bump. So it is difficult to know how your shape will change.

CalypsoLilt · 13/10/2015 17:31

I'm 22 weeks and I've already upped my bra size twice. Sainsbury's do good no wired bras if you don't want to spend a fortune. I'm also just about to buy new knickers as my bum is getting bigger :( I have 2 pairs of tights, could probably do with more.

I have 1 pair of jeans and it's depressing, definitely need at least 1 more, if not 2. I have a maternity coat which is great but I doubt it's going to be warm enough if we have a proper winter.

The rest sounds about right. I definitely wouldn't buy all in one go, just buy it as you need it.

Oh and I have a maternity swim suit too :)

poocatcherchampion · 13/10/2015 20:52

Too much by far.

You need to pace yourself as well. Some things will fit well only when you are smaller, you will need some things for when you are massive and some for afterwards.

I had one smart/work dress and a couple of skirts. A few different tops. 2 nighties and some casual trousers. T shirts I mostly layer with long tops.
Etc etc

Only buy things when you need them.

mumchkin · 14/10/2015 03:53

Don't buy everything at once - just buy as you need things. I'm 29 weeks and still making do with my normal clothes (the ones that fit still) plus a pair of maternity tights, leggings and 3 maternity dresses.

FizzlePops · 14/10/2015 05:54

I agree, honestly that sounds like a waste and you probably wont be in maternity clothes for long after the baby either. I had a few pairs of jeans a couple of tops but mainly made do with stuff I already had.
I wore jogging bottoms for the first few weeks or leggings for comfort than back in ordinary jeans. Honestly just buy as you need.

Mawsymoo · 14/10/2015 06:53

Totally agree with everyone - buy as you need. All you'll probably need for the first half or more is new bras. I never needed new pants and just wore pj bottoms under my bump with a stretchy top. I also agree you may not need maternity clothes afterwards either - I was in hospital for 5 nights and brought maternity jeans to wear home and had to hold then up with one hand on the way to the car to stop them falling down! I ended up in yoga pants etc for a few weeks until my normal clothes fit again.

Strawclutching · 14/10/2015 07:07

I have bought maternity pjs from top shop. I love them and they are so comfy and look nice (if anyone pops by.) I was in maternity clothes for nearly a year so this time I've invested in 3 pair of jeans.

eurochick · 14/10/2015 07:32

I never needed special pants during pregnancy. And I wore my usual tights but snipped an inch or two down the front seam so they fitted under my bump. I agree with the suggestion to buy as you go along.

Skiptonlass · 14/10/2015 10:43

I used the tights a lot (I tend to live in stretchy jersey dresses)

Also got a lot of wear out of a couple of pairs of h and m jeans, a heap pair of pj bottoms from h and m and leggings (asos do good ones)

I didn't buy new bras till the end, and the rest of my wardrobe fitted k right u to the end as well. Anything you've got that's a bit longer in the body and stretchy will likely fit you.

I'd get a pair of leggings, pair of jeans, and then just get stuff as and when you need it. It's hard to see in advance how you will carry and how your body will change - I actually went down two back sizes in my bra for example.

TaliZorah · 14/10/2015 10:47

More than enough. I bought no maternity clothes, no way was I going to spend money on something I'd only wear for a few months. You'll be fine with thatx

CarShare · 14/10/2015 15:47

Yes, agree with others that say see how you get on. I normally wouldn't touch skinny jeans with a 10 foot pole due to thunder thighs but since the bump balances things out a bit I am living in the couple of pairs passed on to me from my sis, whereas the styles I'd normally go for like tunics and leggings make me look like a big round ball. I'm also happy wearing tops that cling to my bump but didn't know this until the bump got big and I liked the shape (worried I'd have a big B bump that would just look lardy).

I also thought I wouldn't bother with PJs but have two pairs of bottoms from M&S at £12.50 each which are just so comfy and will do for after I've had the baby whilst the tummy deflates again.

I think the office dress code relaxes a little for prego's so I've bought one skirt that I can wear with several H&M maternity tops that I also enjoy wearing at the weekend.

CarShare · 14/10/2015 15:51

Oh- and I've bought a couple of long cardi's from Zara (currently in the shops and online at £15.99 a pop), they are really soft and comfy, cover all sins and wash very well. I will def get plenty of use out of them after the babies born and they are smart enough for work (IMO!)

babybat · 14/10/2015 16:03

I've found that I really don't like the feeling of clothes that are too clingy/tight over the bump, so rather than go for specific maternity wear, I've preferred jumpers and tops in larger sizes that are a bit more loose fitting. If you have an itchy bump you might find the same, so hold off on buying too much stuff too quickly! So far, at 23 weeks, the things I've got the most use out of are under-bump jeans, a couple of Gap maternity t-shirts, and some non-maternity jumpers/cardis and a fleece. I don't really wear dresses much, so haven't bought any, but my pre-pregnancy jersey wrap dresses still fit okay.
