im 40 weeks are fancy a potter round nice little buggy unfriendly shops, DH can't come with me till I'm +5, so how far would you go from home when you're over? 45 minutes too far (driving, opposite direction to hosp)
second baby, first was +7

I went for a long walk in a wood what wasn't really accessible by car when I was overdue. My husband phoned while I was out and I explained where I was. 10 minutes later he rang back because all the women he worked with were worrying about me!

Baby ended up being pulled out at 40+12 so I had nothing to worry about.

How quick was labour last time.. Could you have driven at the start??

Junosmum · 12/10/2015 20:24

Midwife has advised me not to go more than an hour away from 37 weeks on wards, and I certainly wouldn't go that far alone - can't imagine driving for an hour and being in labour!

Thanks, gut feel is I've time but last dc was a slow back to back delivery- if this is straight forwards aware it could be quicker!
Had to travel along way from home, accompanied, at 39.5 wks, Mw said take bag, I was grateful to get back from that so prob shouldn't be greedy!

I'd go far with dh

On my own less far but I really believe that labour only happens at night. Or atvleast the interesting bits.

I have a 30 mile commute every day by public transport so I'll probably be starting mat leave quite early, about six weeks before I'm due. I'm only 21 weeks now but I doubt I'll leave the house much on mat leave as I don't drive so I'd feel too vulnerable. I'll probably potter about near the house, take ds to school etc.

Bastardshittits · 13/10/2015 07:27

I was at my mums house about 20mins from home when I realised I was having contractions every 5 mins. I managed to drive me and the other dc's home but wouldn't recommend it.

Qwertybynature · 13/10/2015 07:30

Personally, because I had a fast labour with my first one, I'd probably stay closer to home from due date onwards (as in 30 min radius from home).

It all depends on how you feel about it though. Could you easily get a taxi / help / or get to wherever you're planning on giving birth, quickly if you needed to?

newbian · 13/10/2015 07:55

With a second baby I wouldn't go very far at all, they are meant to be much quicker. I know quite a few people whose second babies flew out - my uncle missed the birth entirely (worked 30 min drive from the hospital) and a friend delivered in the back of a car!

Dixiechick17 · 13/10/2015 08:29

I went to a wedding reception I'm the middle of nowhere about thirty mins away when I was three days overdue. Had my husband with me though and as it was a dual carriageway from there to the hospital, I knew he'd be able to put his foot down. I wouldn't have been able to drive In labour as my contractions were immediately four in ten and very strong.

I would buy a nice baby sling, and go to the buggy unfriendly shops with baby in a few weeks :)

Thanks all
