Baby moving a lot more than usual today?

Am 33 weeks at the moment. Today the baby has been really active, almost non-stop. Usually it is pretty active in the morning, then has 'down time' periods during the day interspersed with 10-30 mins of movement, then is active on and off all evening. But today it's been virtually non-stop movement all day, which is unusual. Not sure whether to be concerned? I had a midwife appointment this morning where baby got poked and prodded a bit - could that have anything to do with it do you think?

Have you been hitting the sugar or not moving around so much? If I've been inactive this results in a serious upturn of movement from the wee one. It gets to the point where I have to walk around to make him stop as its hurting. Inevitably its accompanied by a really quiet day the next day as he's knackered himself out.

I guess I would't be surprised if the baby was a bit excited after being prodded, but maybe there are other changes in your diet/activity responsible and this is a coincidence with the MW?

Thanks for your response :)
Not had more sugar than usual - but I have had more caffeine now I come to think of it... Usually have 1 cup of caffeinated tea in the morning to get me going and the stick to decaff, but today I had 2. Wonder if that might be partly to blame...

I remember similar movements around the same stage - the baby had actually moved himself around to breech ! I was worried for about three weeks - then had another period of frantic movement and he was the right way up (or down) again Smile

Hi OP, I think they advise any change in movement to be be dicussed with midwife etc. perhaps call your mau? I doubt it's anything to worry about but no harm in speaking to them on the phone?

I think the advice is to call about any change in movement not just decreased movement. Definitely call midwife. I'm sure it's ok but worth checking if not sure re increased movement. I think a couple of extra coffee shots might be increased movement, not sure about 1 cup of tea more.

Thanks for your messages, I really appreciate them!
I called my local birth centre and spoke to a volunteer, who relayed my message to a midwife. I was told that it would be of concern if the baby was moving non-stop for around an hour and they might think then about whether they needed to see me, so to call them back if this was the case.
Although it's been very active, more so than usual, it hasn't had any periods of non-stop movement lasting this long; it's been more bursts of activity & then little 'rests'. So will sit tight and see how things go...

Quick update: By 7pm yesterday the movements had ramped up even more and were non-stop for an hour, so I called again. Spoke at length to a lovely midwife who essentially said increased movement on it's own is not a concern - it's when it's accompanied by a) signs of infection in the mother (e.g. shivery, high temperature etc), b) bleeding or abnormal discharge, c) intense back or abdominal pain or d) where there are signs of pre-term labour, or e) where the pregnancy is high risk or the mother has a known underlying medical condition that they would want to see someone who's baby is moving more than normal. Thankfully none of those were/are the case for me.
Went for a walk, had a bath, told myself to calm the f* down (!) and by later that evening baby had chilled out and I got some sleep last night! Let's see what today brings, but overall I am really reassured.
Just thought I'd post a quick update in case anyone reads this thread later on and is wondering about increased movement :)

It may well have been the extra caffeine if you normally are careful but had a bit more than usual. At about 34 weeks I had a day where my baby was moving non stop too (as you say, bursts of activity and small rests) and I was worried. I realised I usually limit myself to 1 can of pop a day or 1 cup of tea a day. That day I'd had 2 cans of pop and 1 cup of tea!

I had doppler scan that day anyway and baby was totally fine, blood flow all good. So always worth getting checked as you say but normally it is fine Smile
