2hr glucose challenge- 8.9

I had a glucose test at 28 weeks (overnight fast, glucose and 1 blood test after 2 hours. Different a bit to gtt). Was ok at 28 weeks (7), but midwife suggested another at 36 weeks and it's come back at 8.9, I've been asked to come in tomorrow to learn about testing blood sugar. It seems late for this, my bump is small, not gained tons of weight (bmi 20 before).

There's part of me that wishes I hadn't done the test, I've seen now elsewhere that lots of women can have impaired tolerance at this stage.

Does anyone have more knowledge than me about results/ advice/ experience. Love to hear

They'll probably do a growth scan if you haven't had one recently.

8.9 is quite high, not off the scale but not borderline either.
Do you have any risk factors for GD? Why did the midwife suggest the two gtts?

MisterPip · 06/10/2015 16:10

My mum is type two, she's still quite young and fit and slim which made them think I'm more likely to be disposed to it as she was diagnosed at 48 having had a good diet/ weight for life (old hippy...)

The second was suggested after an off the cuff remark about a recent obsession with weeing and water I've developed

Why did they want a second test? Is this your first baby?

Northernlurker · 06/10/2015 16:27

Oh sorry x posted. Hmmmmm. I thought women with GD didn't usually display many of the typical diabetes symptoms.

I think you need to be clear what your situation is. Are they diagnosing you as having gestational diabetes?

MisterPip · 06/10/2015 16:27

It's my third baby. Reason for second test above. Nearly didn't go

I'm going in tomorrow, all the midwife said in the phone is that I was above their cut off and shed show me how to monitor blood sugars if I could come in tomorrow. Guess I'll find out more then but I'm impatient hence the post

I thought that too northern, pointed out the frequent weeing was probably down to my bladder being squashed and thirst I overheat easily with a hot water bottle down my top!

The thing is that if it's a false positive and your sugars generally stay at healthy levels then you'll see that as you test them going forward. Have they told you anything else other than you will need to test your sugars, ie implications for place of birth etc?

My mum was also diagnosed type 2 in 40s (and slim) and I've had GD in all my pregnancies and am now prediabetic (and I'm also thin and healthy) so it's not impossible.

Well I I'm due to meet the supervisor of midwives again soon about place of birth, I had a large pph last time. I'm REALLY hoping to use the birth centre
