Hey

So I am supposed to be starting low dose aspirin as i developed pre-eclampsia at 39 weeks last pregnancy, baby didnt budge until 41+1 and i was carefully monitored etc but with labetalol i managed to avoid a c section. Now I have spent weeks looking at the research and reading up on the risks etc. It seems that the main piece of research that was completed found no significance in taking aspirin and the reduction in rates of pre eclampsia or pre term labour. However it did show significance when combined with data from SOME previous studies. In addition it did note that there was an increased risk in haemorrhaging and needing transfusions after labour when low dose aspirin was taken throughout pregnancy (2nd t onwards). Has anyone else looked into this before and what did you find? Anyone with previous pre eclampsia who then took low dose aspirin in subsequent pregnancies and then did not have it. I'm trying to weigh up the pro's and con's. Ultimately it comes down to the decision what is best for baby and what is best for my son that I already have. O the crazy ramblings of a crazy pregnant lady who is suspicious of aspirin.

(also before any trolls think i am a conspiracy nut and I am pro vaccination - everyone else can ignore this comment as has nothing to do with above)

I'm high risk for developing pe again. I had it severe early onset with hellp syndrome and had a very scary experience that resulted in delivery at 31 weeks. My son was also born with complex health problems so unfortunately we didn't escape lightly. I've been on aspirin since my bfp. It's part of my plan put on place before we started ttc. It's taken us over 7 years to be brave enough to try again, with a mmc earlier this year. No idea if it will work as I'm only 10 weeks but I will keep taking the meds as prescribed. I think most people are advised to stop taking them around 36 weeks to avoid the clotting complications

Flambola · 07/10/2015 06:26

Are you consultant led? Have they advised you take the aspirin? If so, I would take it.

I'm taking 75mg daily and will be until approx 36 weeks. It's no bother.

I took aspirin in both my pregnancies. No issues at all

Thanks ladies, the problem with pregnancy is you try to be as rational and as sensible as you can, but you forget about these hormones that just mess everything up!

Not for pre-eclampsia but another who took aspirin throughout both pregnancies and breastfeeding - no problems. Ideally you need to stop two weeks(?) before due date iirc to reduce chance of post-partum bleeding ....and I would only do it on the advice of a consultant, so it is on your health record. And carry a card or something saying you were taking it (and tell them if you could) for the paramedics in case of an accident etc.
(I took aspirin daily anyway for 15 yrs +).

FoggyMorn · 07/10/2015 09:09

With DS, I took mini aspirin and another anti inflammatory (high dose pharma grade fish oil) and high dose folic acid (also has anti inflammatory properties), on the advice of my consultant. This was due to my age, and history of multiple miscarriage, (to improve placental function mostly) but I read the same info you did re the risks/benefits.

I was told to stop taking the aspirin at 34weeks, iirc, to reduce this risk.

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 07/10/2015 09:15

Problem is that even the consultants don't agree, so you are never going to get a definitive on this unfortunately.

My own experience is one problem free pregnancy followed by three miscarriages on the trot. I am consultant led with this one (my last due to age) and I just decided to agree to everything she recommended. So I am on both aspirin and heparin daily and will be for as long as she tells me to be (22 weeks currently).

I'm just not clever enough to work these things out myself so I've decided to trust in Simeon who has years of experience and expertise.

My worry at the moment is that I have a fibroid that they were very concerned about with pregnancy 1, ie the potential to bleed out. It's still there with this one and yet no one seems concerned even though my blood will obviously be a lot thinner this time round so I'm assuming more likely to bleed.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful xx

Hallo. I'm currently pregnant for the third time, and taking a big pile of drugs to prevent miscarriage and other issues. I've taken aspirin and clexane (an injectable blood thinner) all three times with no problem, and two healthy, if not very well trained, children as a result.

Oh, and I took both right up to delivery with no bleeding issues, thankfully.

Unlucky - I thought aspirin was strictly verboten when breastfeeding because of Rayes (sp?) disease?

First who heparin/clexane isn't really a problem - there is an antidote anyway (I did heparin (fragmin) as well for mine) - you stop the heparin a day or two before (ie when you get the show) but the only problem if you don't is you can't have an epidural...so an emc would have to be under GA.

Out -link - www.drugs.com/breastfeeding/aspirin.html.
Daily low dose aspirin is a tiny amount 75mg every day (standard adult pain killing dose is 300-900mg) eg in that link the first case of it causing a problem the mother was taking almost 4g every day - so 50x as much...
And there is the same argument for Reyes is for during pregnancy too (a chemist refused to sell me 75mg aspirin when pregnant - I used to buy it otc rather than on prescription pre pregnancy as it was cheaper so had carried on)
It is all about balancing up the risks - and definitely in my case it appeared (at the time*) that the benefit outweighed the risk.

  • apparently most recent research is that low dose aspirin does not prevent DVT formation but it does still seem to prevent miscarriage and stop clot formation in the placenta...
outputgap · 07/10/2015 10:28

Thanks unlucky. That's interesting. I've ended up abruptly ending breastfeeding twice because I've started aspirin as soon as I'm pregnant. Not that it bothered my dcs, just upset me!

KittyandTeal · 07/10/2015 10:35

This is a slightly different angle. I had dodgy 12 week bloods that showed low Papp a. As they were concerned about iugr I started on baby dose aspirin.

Unfortunately at our 20 week scan we found soft markers and dd2 was diagnosed with T18. The specialists at Kings were surprised with her abnormalities that she had survived so long. The only explaination was possibly a mixture of the aspirin and exercise kept the blood flow through the placenta so good that she survived to 22 weeks.

I'm not sure about pre eclampsia but as far as blood flow through the placenta in my experience it works. I didn't have any issues at birth either although I did give birth at 22 weeks and dd2 wasn't alive so I guess that changes the risks, although I think the risk of haemorrhage is still there (which I didn't suffer)

I'm not sure if that helps at all. Good luck with your decision.
