Ok so I feel a bit silly asking this but my midwife said this week that as there is physically nowhere left for baby to go I could give birth early as this can happen with petite ladies (I'm 5 foot and 37 weeks)

Is this true for any short ladies out there? It does technically make sense but I also think it sounds silly but surely a midwife would know! Petite ladies let me know were you early or late?

There's a theory that the baby is born when the mothers metabolism can no longer sustain the foetus. I suppose there might be some correlation between body size and that? But it'd certainly not be strong enough to be a hard and fast rule.

Now bump size, however... :) I remember my mw saying to me, "you're short, this baby has nowhere to go but outwards!" She was right!

Hehe thanks Skipton, maybe it's cos I'm so petite but so big that she said it!

I'm 5ft, give or take! My Dc1 was born at two weeks over due and was induced but eventually came out with a EMCS and she was 8lb 10oz. I'm 36+6 today and have an ELCS planned at 39 weeks unless this one decides to come earlier?

I'm 5'2". DS was induced at 42 weeks. He didn't engage until I was in labour.

On Tuesday I gave birth to twins weighing 5lb5oz and 6lb6oz by EMCS after 3 days of failed induction. Neither of them engaged, in fact they stayed so high up there was not enough pressure to push down and help my cervix dilate which was a contributing factor to needing a section.

So no, I don't think your height/petite-ness have any bearing on going into labour.

I'm 4'11 and a small frame and was glad when my waters broke at 36+4 and after a long labour DS was born at 37weeks as I was certainly struggling but I know of plenty of smaller women who went over.
He weighed 7lbs coming then so I'm glad he didn't get to be much bigger inside me as I was struggling to breathe/walk/eat.
We have an obstetrician friend who seems to be scarily accurate at predicting when babies will turn up from looking at size, shape and how your carrying (he predicted mine spot on including events leading up to and method of birth, it was freaky) - I'm sure it's a mix of luck and being present for thousands of births.

5ft and DS was born 5 days late weighing 6lb 13oz, did need assistance though as he got stuck (episiotomy and forceps) ....midwife joked it was because of my tiny (size 2) feet, but I think that's a myth too!

ohthegoats · 05/10/2015 11:18

5 foot 1, went to 42+1, baby was 7lbs 8.

My mother is 4'11" and had me (vaginally) weighing in at over 9 pounds. Your body is amazing and there is nearly always more room to grow, even if that is outwards. I was admittedly 2 weeks early, but I would have been 10lbs+ if full term and came early because I was clearly grown (not because my mum was small). I'm 5'2" and 27 weeks and hoping my baby does end up as big as I was!
