6 weeks pregnant and going on spa break - advice needed

Hi folks,
Sorry if this is a naive question. I'm going on a spa break with a friend next weekend. We booked before I fell pregnant.

What spa activities should I refrain from, if any, at 6 weeks pregnant?

Congratulations Flowers Smile

I believe you shouldn't use hot tub/jacuzzi, steam room and sauna due to the high temperatures involved, and there's probably certain treatments you can't have although not sure which. You may be required to complete a health questionnaire prior to any treatments where you'll have to state you are pregnant. It may be worth calling the spa in advance to find out.

You probably won't be allowed any sort of massage either, it's generally avoided until you're 12 weeks. I would definitely call.the spa in advance so your expectations are well managed.

Facials and mani/pedi should all be fine though!!

I had the exact same thing, the spa refused point blank to do anything apart from a file and polish on my nails! They wouldn't budge. Apparently because up to 12 weeks is the 'danger zone' if they DID do a facial and then god forbid the person then had a miscarriage, although almost certainly unrelated you could blame them.
My friend was allowed a facial at 10 weeks at a different spa.
I also wasn't allowed to use the hot tubs / jacuzzi / steam room / sauna etc (very dull day for me! ). Makes hiding pregnancy very hard too
Have fun and congratulations! X

Oh fuck. I wasn't expecting that kind of response. I guess I'm still so early I don't really feel pregnant. Good job I asked and now know what to expect. I'll ring the spa. How does a facial or back massage affect your pregnancy so early on?? It's going to be impossible to hide from my friend now.... Gah!

Congratulations! I went on a spa break at 36 weeks pregnant... The only things I was allowed were nail treatments and use of the pool. Although, I was quite happy faffing round the side of the pool with a nice cocktail and some glossy new nails!

puddingbrains · 03/10/2015 00:15

Autocorrect changed my mocktail to cocktail. I wasn't boozing, honest Shock

I had a 30th birthday spa day...found out I was pregnant the day before. I had to fill in a form which asked if I was pregnant and if so, how many weeks. After that they wouldn't do anything other than my nails. Almost all places only offer selected treatments to women over 12 weeks.

I was allowed a facial/shoulder and neck massage at six weeks and no one was policing whether or not I was in the jacuzzi. My biggest issue was my bikini top repeatedly bursting open as my boobs had got so much bigger Smile Enjoy the trip!

Cancel the spa day! It will just be a very very very expensive swim if you're pregnant

RNBrie · 03/10/2015 07:17

I recently passed a bunch of massage qualifications and this came up a couple of times. There is no evidence at all that massage has any effect on pregnancy pre 12 weeks. However most insurance companies forbid it, if the therapist goes ahead then they invalidate their insurance which they won't do. So you probably won't find anyone willing to give you a massage until you're past 12 weeks.

Can you find a spa that does pregnancy treatments? Lots do mum to be packages.

mrschatty · 03/10/2015 09:15

In first 12w they really won't do anything I'm a regular massage/body polish/ facial kind of girl and my beautician absolutely refused to see me until I was 13w...

She advised it's due to stimulating pressure points which may be bad for baby.

Even mum to be package she won't do in first 12w unfortunately. But now I'm in week 25 she can adapt most things to suit... like others have said it's a pretty expensive swim in first 12m

There are trigger points that induce labour, so make sure you get pregnancy massages (wonderful to have...I had loads but I was a therapist). Avoid too many essential oils and herbal teas. Keep it simple. No saunas! I know, you know the drill but don't be tempted for a minute. No overheating. There is a lot you can and will enjoy. There is usually a pregnancy package at these places. Congratulations! All fear mongering aside! Lol! GrinFlowers

I used to sit on the side of whirl pools and pop my legs in. The water felt wonderful and I could chat to friends while they were in it. I didn't get hot and no direct heat on baby.
