75mg aspirin daily to reduce pre eclampsia risk?

I had my 20 week scan today, all looked well, very happy!

I have had pregnancy induced hypertension in previous two pregnancies and post delivery bp problems.

The consultant today recommended 75mg aspirin till delivery to prevent pre eclampsia. I had no idea it did this, only knew of it used to thin blood in blood clotting issues, so I imagine it is new research?

Has anyone found it to help prevent PE or bee recommended to take it?

Hi op, this is very common. I had pre-e, though I didn't have the aspirin treatment (probably should have!) but I heard a lot about it

It's an rcog or possible nice guideline now for at risk women. Has been for about 2years/18 months.

Hi
I'm 19 weeks pregnant, have been advised to take 75 mgs of aspirin perday.
I'm 46 so higher risk of pre eclampsia. I've also heard it helps blood flow to the placenta.
I think it's quite common. However if you had to have a c section, wouldn't it make you bleed more?

You usually stop taking it around full term (36 ish weeks) to aid clotting. It has a cumulative effect so wears off over 2 weeks I believe

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 02/10/2015 20:41

Guidelines originally said to stop around 36 weeks but most consultants now ime don't get women to stop taking it so I'm guessing taking it till labour hasn't had an effect on heamorhage.

I developed severe pre-eclampsia/HELLP syndrome towards the end of my first pregnancy, DS arrived via emcs at 35+4, growth restriction was a concern due to reduced blood flow to the placenta. I've been taking 75mg aspirin a day since 12 weeks in this pregnancy. Currently 33 weeks and fine, baby growing well, although maybe i would have been ok this time anyway.

I think it depends on where you live. Last year when I was pg with dd I took it right up to 40 weeks, this year pg with ds but living in a different county and was told that they don't recommend it here Confused I'll be pretty pissed off if I do end up with a clot/pre-eclamsia now!

PositiveAttitude · 02/10/2015 21:08

We had severe Pre-Eclampsia/HELLP syndrome at 26 weeks with DD1, and after 4 miscarriages I was then advised to take the aspirin. This was 25 years ago and I believe I was one of the first to be told to do this. I took aspirin throughout all my future pregnancies and had 4 healthy babies. (I did have pre-eclampsia with DD3 and she was born at 35 weeks)

It worked for me! Smile

custardcreamdreams · 02/10/2015 21:13

I had PE with 1st dc who was born prem and growth restricted. Took aspirin with 2nd, 4 years ago - no PE, overdue baby, perfect weight. Don't know if the aspirin was a factor but it certainly didn't hurt. Best of luck with your pregnancy.

ThePug · 02/10/2015 21:56

I'm type 1 diabetic which puts me at increased risk of PE for some reason, so my consultant prescribed me this to take from 12 weeks until I give birth.

Frasras11 · 02/10/2015 22:32

I hit two risk factors for pre eclampsia so have taken it this pregnancy and my last which was 4 years ago. Never actually has it or had any blood pressure problems in either pregnancy.

bluewisteria · 03/10/2015 09:14

Thanks all so much, it is very helpful.

The advice seems quite sporadic from what I've read up on, down to individual consultants or trusts. My last child was nearly 4 years ago and a different part of the country so perhaps that's why I wasn't prescribed it before.

I had a read of this website action-on-pre-eclampsia.org.uk/pre-eclampsia-information/fact-sheet1-low-dose-aspirin-for-high-risk-pregnancy/
Which has confused me as I fall into the category of wine who should not take it!

I started taking it at 20 weeks this time. I have been put on labetalol this week as my BP has increased. I'm now 35 weeks, last time my BP became a problem much earlier and I was on labetalol from 28 weeks. So it has helped but hasn't preventrd problems. I ended up having to deliver my son at 37 weeks last time due to pre-eclampsia and his growth stopping. Looks like this is going the same way RE: growth.

So it may not stop problems occurring but I have lasted longer with a normal blood pressure this time round. Am just praying I don't get pre-eclampsia again. I am being much more closely monitored from this week onwards though.

Alyx80 · 03/10/2015 09:49

I had PE with my 10 yr old and took aspirin from about 12w with my following 3 pregnancies. I still had BP troubles but no PE.

I've just found out I'm pregnant with DC3 - after a long time trying! Went to have it confirmed at doctors and blood pressure was 153/101, which they said is quite high...I wouldn't really know. Not sure if it's anxiety induced or not (I've had 2 MCs this summer so am feeling quite anxious). Nevertheless, the doctor has put me on 75mg aspirin daily. I think this may also be because I had high BP all through pregnancy with DS1 and had to take aspirin then too. Never developed into pre-eclampsia if that helps! Fingers crossed this one doesn't either and all is well.
Good luck with all of your pregnancies ladies xx
