Stronger than cyclizine?

7+1 in this pregnancy and I have hyperemesis again. I had it in my first too so this time round as soon as I got my bfp I saw the gp and got cyclizine. I think it has been helping a lot so far, keeping the sickness to all day bad nausea and just one or two vomits a day. Yesterday afternoon however I think I got a whole new batch of hormones because I am now vomiting almost constantly unless asleep and can't keep anything down at all. I feel wretched. So, is there anything stronger than cyclizine that I may be able to take?

I'm in Ireland and have been prescribed Cariban (it's B6 plus antihistamine). There are definitely other anti-emetics which are safe too. But they are expensive. I've paid€40 for 6 days of Cariban for example. So you'll have to be pushy.

Ondansetron is the next step up from cyclizine. It's safe in pregnancy. It's also expensive so GPS can be reluctant to prescribe it ime.

Promethazine and cyclizine are the first line, then prochlorperazine (Stemetil) or metoclopramide. They can also give you ondansetron, which is probably the strongest thing you can have but many are reluctant to prescribe this.

The b6 /antihistamine combo is literally just that - postereh I'd be rummaging around for doxylamine and b6 separately ;) it's crazy expensive stuff but both components should be readily available over the counter.

(Always, always check with your local pharmacist though, to make sure you've got what you think you have!)

Thanks so much everyone. Hopefully got my mum coming over to do the school run today as can't move without thinking I'm going to be sick. Will call the Dr and see if I can get a new prescription without having to go down. Thanks for all your advice

Thanks skipton, I'm hoping my health insurance will cover it but good to know if not.

I was on ondansetron and cyclizine and they helped alot although I still was sick everyday they eased it massively. I had HG until 21 weeks and was constantly in hospital. You could possibly ask your Dr to prescribe you the ondansetron aswell I found it so easy to take as it melts in your mouth so even if I couldn't stomach a drink I could take it anyway x

Hellohellohowareyou · 30/09/2015 17:21

Ondansetron was the only thing that reduced my vomiting but I was still sick whilst taking it 5 ish times a day up until 32 weeks. Also made me very constipated and gave me bad headaches but it was better than vomiting constantly!

I really do feel for you, 2 HG pregnancies for me was enough. It's so much harder when you already have children to look after

weebarra · 30/09/2015 17:23

I know it's not the same but I had ondansetron during chemotherapy and it was great, meant I could function!

BikeRunSki · 30/09/2015 17:36

I tried every antiemetic going both times I was pregnant. The absolute best by far was intravenous cyclizine, although you do have to be in hospital for this and it has rather "trippy" side effects. Metrocloprimide eventually got me functioning first time, Stemitil second time. My friend swore by Phenergan. Avomine made me worse!

99percentchocolate · 30/09/2015 18:30

Thanks everyone. Phoned the Dr but they are closed for training today so will try again tomorrow morning.

I had some cyclizine injections which really helped and then when things settled down I took cyclizine in tablet form.

I had the injections at the GPs and I am a bit disappointed that I didn't experience any of BikeRunSk's side effects Grin

I also tried Stemetil which didn't help and made me feel awful.

Hellohellohowareyou · 30/09/2015 18:59

Best at home meds ondansetron but yes my god a couple of days on iv made me feel amazing Grin

Just a little update for those that were kind enough to offer advice. Dr has now prescribed metrocloprimide so we shall see how I get on with that. He is concerned that I'm not getting enough fluid though so if no better over the weekend then I have to start seeing him regularly for keytone monitoring. Fingers crossed I manage to avoid hospital again.

I was exactly the same as this, I ended up trying cyclizine, stemitil, promethazine in injections and tablets, each would work for a few days and then i'd get worse again :( I took a trip to my local GAU, as I was feeling awful, they re-hydrated me and gave me a drip bag of vitamins etc to perk me up and then ondansetron tablets. I'm still taking them at 15 weeks but they are making a massive difference, though as others have said its very expensive so GP wont prescribe, I have to go back to the hospital every 4 weeks to get a new prescription :)

Moodyblue1 · 08/10/2015 16:21

The best thing I did was get cyclizine through a drip (was admitted for this) but it massively tripped me out I was seeing things but it stopped the sickness long enough for me to be able to get some fluids into me. I then went onto ondansetron which was by far the best. I'm almost 38 weeks and still sick most days but not anywhere near as bad as the early days.

I hope you start to feel better soon.
