Notifying work about pregnancy & matb1 form

How are you supposed to go about officially telling work about a pregnancy? I've told them unofficially so I can take time off for appointments, but the booklet at my workplace says that it needs to be done in writing before 25 weeks. Does this need to be an officially worded and printed out letter that I hand in in person or can it be an email? I guess a picture of a pregnancy test with a 'guess what' caption wouldn't cut it

And does anyone know when you get the matb1 form? I had more midwife appointments in my last pregnancy, but this time I have one at 16 weeks, which is actually at 18 weeks, then no more till 28 weeks which is too late for work.

If I remember you get your Mat1b from 20 weeks, and I didn't have an appointment at that point so asked at the previous appointment and the midwife either forward dated it, or I collected it at 20 weeks.
After that I sent it, along with a form I filled in to HR and that was the formal bit. If there is no form I suspect an email will do!

Thanks mango I'll ask at my next midwife appointment and hopefully get all the paperwork all done in one go via email!

You're welcome! You might have to give your original mat1b in, do make sure to copy it first for DP/DH's pat leave if it's required!

I was told that, in addition to the MATB1 form, I also needed to formally inform them in writing of when I intended to start my maternity leave. I Googled a template letter and just altered it to suit my job/dates.

My gp and midwife wouldn't issue me a matB1 form until I was 28 weeks altleast but that may just be here

I'm getting my matb form at 28 weeks apparently, HR said as long as they have it before I go on leave they are happy.

I wrote an email to he and copied in my manager stating that I planned to take my maternity leave starting from x date, this may change due to complications but will give them as much notice as possible if this needs to change. I also have a rough idea of when I will be coming back but you absolutely do not have to do this Smile

Some employers insist on it before 25 weeks - inc many public sector companies and the civil service.

Therefore there is only a window of 5 weeks to get it sorted. Apparently GPS can also issue them if your midwife is impossible to get hold of

I have only just given my work my matb1 form at 28 weeks. I had already notified them I was pregnant to take time off for appointments but also because they are meant to so a risk assessment.
With my matb1 I officially said when I was going on mat leave. I had already discussed the plans with my line manager so it wasn't a suprise to hear it from hr.
At my work they don't calculate your mat pay until your matb1 either.. But as I'm off in 2 months I'd obviously calculated it already!
2 months you say?? That's 22 days for me!! X

It really does sound like it varies depending on the area and the workplace titus and mummy. I'll ask beg the midwife at my next appointment. Thanks for the tip about the GP's poocatcher, luckily my doctors surgery are quite helpful and understanding when it comes to forms, so if the midwife isn't able to give a timescale hopefully the doctors will be able to issue it once I've reached the required number of weeks.

Making a copy is great idea mango, I never thought about the paternity leave documentation. Dh started a new job not too long ago so they might ask for it this time round.

Hope the last days go quickly KatyN! icklepickle I'm hoping to arrange my holidays so I take some at the beginning and some at the end of maternity leave so letting them know a vague plan at this stage sounds like a good idea.

Wouldn't it be nice if

My midwife did my
Matb1 at my 11 week appointment but it hasn't arrived back here yet and that was almost 4 weeks ago!

AmberLav · 30/09/2015 20:14

I got mine at my 28 week appointment, and I'll be handing it in tomorrow, but I did my letter at 24 weeks. Employers do not need the MATB1 by 25 weeks, unless maybe you are going on mat leave at 29 weeks. If you are going at roughly 36 weeks, 28 weeks is more than sufficient, the govt websites tell you when an employer needs it, so google it...
