Pregnant. What to eat/not eat, what to avoid, what to do...?

Right, I'm 5 weeks and 1 day, have had the congratulations from the GP, booked a midwife, got my iodine prescription, been taking folate for a while, have watched Michael Mosley on leafy green veg & listened to The First 1000 Days on fish oil... I'm exercising appropriately (not too hard, no cycling outdoors), eating a healthily Mediterranean diet (avoiding too many servings of fish/livers potentially containing VitA or mercury), not having too much caffeine, avoiding nasty chemicals in laboratories and pesticides when gardening. Handwashing appropriately after gardening, have tetanus vaccine and Toxoplasma antibodies already. Routine scans and tests are all booked in, vaccinations all up to date (pertussis is given in the 3rd trimester here). We're thinking about what needs doing to the house to make it habitable for a baby (rather than a cold-adapted adult with 5 jumpers on). We've got finances under control. We've got a car, we live sufficient distance for parents/inlaws not to be a pain in the bum, we have good sensible friends who have kids who can provide support.

But so far it all seems puzzlingly easy. I've no doubt that will change in about 35 weeks' time, if not rather sooner, like in about a week or two, when morning sickness kicks in Grin

Anyone want to suggest other changes i should be making?

Stopping using tinned food and/or plastic containers for food storage?

Eat yet more broccoli and chinese greens?

or just getting on with normal life and not spending hours every day on Mumsnet?

*Iodine is a standard thing where I am, and maternity is midwife-led here.

Honestly? Take a deep breath and relax.

You sound like you've got this more than covered.

If you're managing to eat a healthy diet you're doing better than I was at your stage! I spent most of my first trimester living on beige food...

Look after yourself. Don't worry about plastic. And congratulations SmileFlowers

Thanks. Reading the original post back I do sound a little bit... er... enthusiastic Grin

It's understandable, it's a massive thing to be going through!

"just getting on with normal life and not spending hours every day on Mumsnet?"

Good heavens! No need to go that far!

Not when you have a shiny new chat thread to join: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/antenatal_clubs/2473774-June-2016-Babies

magnificatAnimaMea · 28/09/2015 07:12

Haha AuntieStella good God, I'll never get anything done if I join that thread... Grin

Actually it might be getting slightly less simple: just having my first evening of feeling definitely a bit queasy...

I'm not sure why you are looking to change as much as possible - I was doing the opposite! Look at the NHS food advice, take folic acid, carry on as normal to the extent you can would be my advice.

5madthings · 28/09/2015 07:34

Um other than taking a preg vitamin with folic acid and eating what I can eat without vommitted I am carrying on as normal. Including riding my bike everyday, but I take the madthings to school on bikes so that will continue until baby is born. Currently 13 wks with no 6 :)

Congratulations :)

magnificatAnimaMea · 28/09/2015 08:01

Not really looking to change things if they don't need changing, mostly just wondering if I've missed anything.

For example the NHS website somewhere does mention phthalates in plastic and tins. But can't find it now...

5madthings congratulations Smile outdoor cycling is much more sensible in some places than others - where i live there are insanely steep hills and too many trucks, so indoor's a better idea Smile

I cycled outdoors as normal until I got too big (about 24 weeks this time round-twin pregnancy).

'But so far it all seems puzzlingly easy.'

Errr...that's because it is. Hmm Pregnancy isn't something which requires life to be turned upside down. It's easy to become neurotic. Relax and enjoy it.

scatterbrainedlass · 28/09/2015 13:41

Congratulations, you sound like you've done your research and got everything in hand, so kick back, relax, and enjoy the pregnancy while you can! If you feel up to it and are fairly active normally, then keep up with some form of exercise, just be careful not to overdo it as your body is a little more fragile right now. Walking, cycling, yoga and swimming are all considered good gentle exercise.
