Lumps on groin. Help

Cafelatte · 30/11/2006 20:52

Hi I am 23 weeks pregnant and have noticed a bulge on the left side of my groin area (or rather ON my pubis but more to the side of it IYSWIM) and another one less obvious, at exactly the same place on the right.
Obviously I am seeking medical advice on this tomorrow but I was wondering if anyone had experienced this in pregnancy?
P.S: This is my second pregnancy and didn't notice anything like that for the first one.
I also suffer from spd.
I am reall scared about this.

Bartholins Cyst maybe?

Cafelatte · 30/11/2006 20:59

Thanks for your reply but it's not really a cyst though, more like a bulge and sometimes it disappears. When I lie down for example.

do you have varicose veins? in that case its probably a saphena varix...nothing to majorly worry about, just a feature of varicose veins in some women.

Hope all works out well...but doesnt sound like anything sinister so try not to worry

Yes I do have varicose veins as it happens really big ones on my legs and generally prominent veins all over my body (more than my first pregnancy).
Thank you I'd never heard of saphena varix before.
I went to the doctors who thought it might be an inguinal hernia but did the examination through my trousers which I didn't think was too thorough, but am getting a second opinion on monday as it's not really a lump but as I said previously more like a long bulge and it's also on each side of the pubis (unless it's a double hernia which would be incredibly unlucky!!!).
I read on the internet (after your post mothertobe) that the symptoms of an inguinal hernia and those of saphena varix were extremely similar so I think I should have a scan to make sure.
I will pester the doctor about it as I am quite worried.
The other thing is my mum told me that she also had those bulges during her last pregnancy and she suffered from varicose veins.

hmmm...your GP doesnt sound too thorough. Inguinal hernias (and in both legs) are rare especially in women. A saphena varix may appear similar but with visible varicose veins i'm certain thats the diagnosis. You don't need to do a scan to confirm it, if your GP knows how to examine veins and has a hand-held doppler, he/she can make the diagnosis just by examination.

Make sure this GP examines you thoroughly this time! All the best.

I really do appreciate your help mothertobe, I've got an appointment tomorrow at 9.30 with another doctor so we'll see what happens.
Thank you again, I'll keep you posted!!!

I am really really distressed because of that encounter with the doctor this morning.
First of all I had to insist that he examins me, I mentionned Saphena Varix and he'd never heard of it (had to look in his book), he told me that the first doctor I'd seen was probably right as hernia was extremely common (although the first doctor said it was extremely rare especially in women) and more or less told me to ask the midwive for any concerns I have regarding the hernia affecting my pregnancy.
But the worst is still to come:
He realized I had a slight urine infection (I'd brought a urine sample as I suspected one) and gave me some antibiotics.
I asked him TWICE wether they were ok to take during pregnancy and he said yes.
When I went to the pharmacy I asked the girl behind the counter AGAIN if it was ok to take during pregnancy and she looked at me blankly and said: "Didn't you check with the doctor?"
I said: "Yes but I'd rather double check".
She gave the prescription to the pharmacist and mentioned I was pregnant.
The pharmacist called me and advised me that he couldn't give me those antibiotics as it could harm my baby.
I was almost in tears, went back to the surgery and advised the receptionist of what happenned.
She laughed, as if to say "ooops, silly doctor!".
I am appalled and at this moment in time, I hate all doctors.
Should I make a formal complaint?
A different doctor prescribed me some different antibiotics (which I'm not gonna take as I'm too scared now) and when I went back to the pharmacist he asked me how many weeks I was, when I said 24 he said: "those previous antibiotics that you were prescribed were only harmful to your baby for the first trimester. They are ok to take on the second and third."
How am I supposed to believe that now?
How can a medication be harmful to your baby before and not after.
I've booked another appointment with a female doctor tomorrow, but frankly I'm not getting my hopes up as at the moment I have NO faith whatsoever in the NHS.
I am disgusted.
I was in tears earlier and I still have to look after my little 2 year old and put a brave face on.
I'm gonna put this on a different thread as well to see what people think.
P.S: I'm still not convinced about the hernia now.

The doctor yesterday said that he didn't think they were varicose veins as they weren't blue.
Maybe they are covered by more fat than the ones on the legs? (sorry absolutely gross I know)

Some meds can be harmful in the first trimester as this is when the main limb formation, spinal cord formation, nervous system develops. This is the most risky time - when drugs can interfere with development. Its fairly common for some drugs to be ok later on in pregnancy but not earlier.
Have no idea about the bulge though, sorry.
