Evening ladies

I has my 28 week check today and the Midwife said there was lots of sugar in my urine sample. I'd not eaten anything for at least 2 and a half hours before I produced my sample, and then only a ham.sandwich and a banana. She recommended I book a glucose tolerance test and wrote 'asap' in the notes. I had to book it at the doctors reception and they've given me a date in 2 weeks time. Is this asap enough do you think?? I've been reading about gestation diabetes and the risks if left untreated etc and scaring myself. I'm sure I'll be fine but there is that little niggle....

I don't think I would be happy waiting that long. I think j would give them a call and explain the situation and see if I could get an earlier appointment.

Also surprised you were not sent for fasting blood sugar and HbA1c tests, which could be done tomorrow and results back in 24/48 hours.
Can you ring and talk to a GP tomorrow and ask for advice?

Cheshirehello79 · 24/09/2015 23:55

I would call them stat and request an earlier date.

Where you asked to fast prior test? I did mine last week and had to fast from midnight only water allowed till next day thank god my appointment was quite early in the morning.

It is a daunting test . They take bloods make you drink 2 bottles of lucozade then wait 2 hours them more bloods. Do remember to take some snack with you after test .

Mine came negative :-) but do keep us posted on your results and if they are going to see you early.

I 'failed' the GTT at 28 weeks then wasn't seen at the diabetes clinic for another two weeks - diabetes nurse didnt think this was a big deal. Said it wasn't desperately urgent.

I've now been monitoring blood sugar levels for two weeks, and despite my best efforts to diet control, I'm going to need metformin. I'm 32 weeks on Sat so essentially my blood sugars have been uncontrolled for 4 weeks.

Nobody seems in the slightest bit bothered - in fact all they've said is that the baby might be a bit on the big side. And that's it Hmm

What are those tests for faded?

Cheshire yes fasting from 10pm the night before and then bloods at 8.50, drink lucozade, sit in waiting room 2 hours, test at 11. Urgh. I don't do well with no breakfast!

tootsie I thought these things would have been more urgent! I'll be over 30 weeks when I get my results from this :-(

I've been flagged up to get the GTT due to a urine sample, I don't think it necessarily works on the same timescale as a blood test (ie if you wait an hour after you eat you will be fine). My surgery also scheduled it for two weeks time and didn't seem too fussed. In the meantime I am treating myself as if I have GD and following the recommended diet (low GI foods) which would probably be what they would advise anyway if it was positive.

Chopsface first a disclaimer, I'm not a MW but am Practice Nurse, so management of gestational diabetes is not my speciality.
Blood glucose test will show what your current blood sugar is, if test done after fasting it should fall within a normal range, if raised then it would indicated a problem (Diabetes or glucose intolerance) and a GGT might be indicated, depending on the result. HbA1c shows whether the blood glucose has been raised over a longer period that the 'one off' blood glucose result.
These tests results would be available to the MW/GP within 24/48 hours, rather than having to wait 2+ weeks to get a GTT result, and the results would give them an indication of how urgent the need for any treatment/different management plan.
Hope you get some reassurance soon.

HbA1c tests are not reliable in pregnancy (which is why pregnant women still get GTTs) so afraid that test won't help (I'm a GP and diabetes specialist). I would let your MW know that's when it's booked for, if she's not happy she could get it done through the hospital (they do all the pregnancy ones usually). A GTT takes a few hours, which is why there is a wait. I don't think a 2 week wait will matter to much personally, as most of the complications from
GD occur in the last trimester (which is why most GTTs aren't done until 26-28 weeks.

That's useful to know Doc and hopefully reassuring to the Op.

They've got me in next Thursday instead :-)
