1st Trimester Diet?

I am the only one not being able to stomach veg right now?! Is everyone eating really healthily, or just what your body tells you to eat - for me it's potato and bread and all things pale . . . I'm eating some fruit, but I'm not sure it's the healthiest diet going (I was better before being pregnant). Should I just force the broccoli down (ugh!)? x

You can buy ketostix from the chemist. I haven't actually used them but basically you wee on them and they tell you if your ketones are high. I think if they are 3+ you need to get rehydrated. Chances are though if you are managing some water you would be OK. I wasn't keeping anything down but it's definitely worth checking. I felt dramatically better after rehydration.

Twll, sounds silly, but it sometimes helps to drink through a straw - it will go straight down, and hopefully stay there.

This is not the time to lose weight - I was quite a bit overweight before - lots of late night snacking + wine - so I think this is shifting a couple of extra pounds that shouldn't have been there. Ahh wine . . . .

Just wanted to say hang in there folks. I spent a good month or so eating toast, crackers, crisps and cheese paninis during the day as the only way to not feel queasy. By the evening I could usually stomach a normal meal but was right off fruit, veg, tea, coffee and chocolate. I didn't need to lose any weight but I unfortunately piled it on a bit much!

Then I progressed to needing fresh green juice alongside the grease, and sour skittles helped in the afternoons.

Am 31 weeks now and I have been eating much more healthily and like I did pre-pregnancy for at least 10 weeks or so. My appetite has stabilised and I eat more or less normally (although a bit less stringent than I was pre preg). No weird cravings although the dairy industry has done well out of me - I tell myself the baby needs the calcium!

So it does get better and just eat whatever gets you through the day. You can focus on healthy eating once you don't feel like you might throw up!

Today I have eaten quite well... half a toasted tea cake for breakfast the dog stole the other half an apple, a cheese ploughmans sandwich and then some cucumber sticks with hummus, but then my friend bought me a doughnut sooo.... Grin

I can't eat unhealthily because I have gestational diabetes (I'm only 6 weeks pregnant - it's going to be a looong pregnancy). Not sure how I'm going to cope once the morning sickness kicks in and I can't eat too many carbs. In my last two pregnancies I wasn't diagnosed until the second trimester so this is my first experience of managing the sickness healthily.

Is GD really an issue in 1st trimester?

MrWriter · 23/09/2015 14:26

Oh god I have been eating the biggest load of junk. The only time I don't feel ill is when I'm eating so I've been continuously munching!

Though this week its getting a bit better, managed a banana for breakfast this morning! Hurrah for a bit of fruit, first in weeks! But went down hill with a sausage baguette for lunch and a packet of cheese and onion mccoys, now trying to think of what to eat!!

TwllBach · 23/09/2015 14:48

Chip bap MrWriter

ORRRRR a salt and vinegar McCoys sandwich with a sliver of cheese and lots of butter, on white bread

MrWriter · 23/09/2015 15:09

TWLL stop it, oh now I NEED a chip buttie!!

Although I was thinking about a beef and mushroom with blackbean sauce for dinner - mushrooms are one of your 5 a day right? Especially covered in sauce!!

TwllBach · 23/09/2015 15:20

I've got over an hours journey home at 6...perhaps I could have a chip butty on the way...

Battleshiphips2 · 23/09/2015 15:34

poster Thats early for GD! Are you sure they haven't missed type 2 before you got pregnant? I've got type 2 and for the whole of my first trimester I've just eaten bread, potato, pasta and crisps! I spoke to diabetic consultant and she just said if it's all you can eat don't worry so I'm sure in a normal pregnancy it's fine. I'm 16 weeks tomorrow and have only just started eating veg!

Heavenscent86 · 23/09/2015 16:15

Tonight I am having cheesy mash. Oh the excitement!

brookeberry · 23/09/2015 16:38

I'm jealous heaven! I'm going to dinner at my parents and the whole family will be there, siblings, nieces etc and we haven't told a soul yet. I'm known for my appetite and will have to appear to eat everything, no matter what it is . . . . . Shock

Battle they're calling it GD but I do have problems with my blood sugars when not pregnant (I'm "prediabetic"). I've been told to be particularly strict in the first trimester Confused. I've found there has been quite a lot of conflicting information generally.

PosterEh · 23/09/2015 18:45

I think they're calling it GD because my levels aren't high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes outside of pregnancy but they are higher than the levels required to be diabetic in pregnancy so I was "diagnosed" as soon as I became pregnant.
