Milk is supposed to help. Rennies are useless, I had a bottle of gaviscon next to my bed and had a swig whenever I got heartburn. Peppermint capsules from Holland and Barrett are supposed to be good but I can't remember if they're ok in pregnancy. I avoided bread, pastry and cheese and managed to keep heartburn at bay most of the time. Not long to go now, good luck

Dairy is supposed to help. Gaviscon is fine to have and yup, sleeping propt up.

Niki18 · 20/09/2015 21:33

My sympathies...I'm only 9 weeks but already suffering from acid reflux and heartburn as a side effect of hg. Im on ranitidine for it. You can get it on prescription from gp or there's an over the counter version called Zantac. In all honesty it doesn't do much for me but I think that's because I'm just really sick in general from constant throw up. Might work for you. I find that eating ice soothes it for a few minutes...what I'm currently doing as I'm in pain too. Try to look at what you're eating. In my pregnancy with dd I had to avoid any caffeine, fizzy drinks, chocolate, citrus, onions, garlic and other things or it would trigger acid reflux.

Flavoured milk is a bit more pleasant. M&S and Waitrose do nice banana or strawberry flavoured milk that is made with fresh milk not UHT. Works a treat!

I also found Rennies to be of no use and only Gaviscon helped. If you are suffering badly I would also suggest packing some in your hospital bag as I suffered terribly after delivery and the hospital couldn't/wouldn't give me anything.

DreamingOfAFullNightsSleep · 20/09/2015 21:45

Only ranitidine helped me by the end. I actually found rennies better than gaviscon in my second pregnancy as the gaviscon made me feel sick- again! Staying propped up on billions of pillows helped too, but it was hard to sleep like that I found.

Thank you all! Will def put some rennie in hospital bag thanks for that tip! And flavoured milk is great idea as can't stand plain milk. Am tucking into some ice cream whilst watching downton so will see how that helps Grin

Have found sleeping upright really helped but agree it def doesn't help with sleeping which is already pretty rubbish at this stage

Poor you! I am 32 weeks and in the last week or so this has become a real problem for me as well. Milk has really helped as well as Gaviscon by the bedside. Not eating too late or fatty foods helps too. If it's really bad then consider eating liquidy foods such as soup for dinner as these are supposed to be quicker to digest. Hope something helps - understand how miserable it can be! Flowers

Runningupthathill82 · 20/09/2015 22:13

I was prescribed ranitidine and omeprazole in my last pregnancy as Gaviscon didn't touch it. Milk also made it worse for me for some reason.
It's utterly miserable, you have my sympathies.

ThatsNotEvenAWord · 20/09/2015 22:20

Renatidine and mcflurries got me through the 3rd trimester

Niki18 · 20/09/2015 22:26

Sandsnake- hope it gets better for you, least not much longer for either of us, and will give the soup ago

Omeprazole (you'll need a prescription from your GP), it's like magic!

acquiescence · 21/09/2015 09:23

As the above poster said, get to the GP and get some omeprazole prescribed. I was suffering terribly and it has completely gone now. I got it prescribed at 31 weeks

Sleep on your left

I know this is going to sound MAD but have you tried apple cider vinegar? I suffeed with horrendous heartburn when I was pregnant and I read online that heartburn is often caused by low stomach acid. I thought it was bonkers at first but I was willing to give anything a go (rantidine and gaviscon didn't begin to touch it).

When your stomach acid levels are low the flap which stops the acid coming back up is loose and floppy, when your stomach levels are high the body signals for the flap to close tightly. This is why long term use of antacids and stomach acid suppressants actually make the problem worse

The problem is compounded in pregnancy because everything shifts up.

2 tsp of apple cider vinegar in a 1/2 to a 1/2 a glass of water works every time for me. At 32 weeks I was able to stop my medication and I've not suffered with heartburn ever since. A gluten free diet also helped as the bloating from bread, pasta etc. just made everything worse.

Good luck OP, heartburn is the pits.
