Trisomy screening mess up and feeling stupid

Hi all,

I had my 16 week appointment with the community midwife this week and mentioned that I hadn't received any results from my trisomy screening, I've just spoken to the screening midwife and turns out I haven't actually had trisomy screening!

I had my booking appointment at 6+3 at the beginning of July, gave consent for trisomy screening and had bloods done. I can't recall any mention of needing a further blood test for the screening at this appointment and assumed they used the results from the booking bloods, although obviously as this was some time ago now I might have forgotten this.

I then had my scan at 12+2 in mid August and consented to have the NT measurement taken. Apparently I should then have been sent off with the form to have my bloods done. Instead the sonographer wrote on this form and left it filed in my notes with no mention of this at all. The lady on the desk then booked my 20 week scan and again there was no mention of going off to have bloods done next.

The screening midwife has offered me the quad test so I'm going for that on Monday morning. She also said she would be putting in an incident form and taking this further as it shouldn't have happened. However I now feel really stupid! I feel like I should have known about this somehow, I'm a Dr (but not in O+G) and it's been over 5 years since my finals when I might have known this stuff, and lots in medicine has obviously changed since then! I just can't shake the 'I'm so stupid!' feeling. Has this happened to anybody else?

What was your nuchal measurement?

There have been a few times over my last two pregnancies where I've thought it was lucky I had some prior knowledge of this process because that wasn't explained very well. Even first time round when you'd think they would assume I knew nothing I had to figure out some stuff for myself.
So don't feel stupid. I think it's because they do it everyday in their jobs that they forget people won't necessarily know stuff if they're not told.

When I was asked for blood after the first scan I was surprised because I too thought that they would use the booking in blood.

There's no way you could have known, don't beat yourself up. Apparently in some hospitals pregnancy is like a brand new thing with no guidance or procedures to follow Hmm

Thanks guys, your responses have made me feel a little better! I just spoke to my paediatrician friend who basically said the same thing and that helped a bit too.

Poster my NT was 1.0mm, obviously I'm happy about this but I wanted the full screening! This is my first pregnancy and I have to say I do feel pretty clueless about it all!

I understand wanting the full screening, I would too - but 1mm is very reassuring in the meantime.

I'm surprised they can't do the full screening now- the nuchal fold measurement is the time sensitive bit and you had that done. They really aren't clear at my antenatal clinic either, lots just waits or sit there, with no idea why I'm waiting or sitting!
