Anyone been told on 20 week scan that cervix is partially obstructed by placenta?

The sonographer has flagged it up to be checked at a later scan ( I've been told they want to scan at 28 weeks/32 and 36).

She said she couldn't see things clearly enough to be able to tell me there wod be no problem and do had said there is a dma chance Iight need a cesarean.

Anyone been told similar and then found towards the end of the pregnancy that the cervix is now clear of obstruction?

Thank you

I had it. I just had a couple of extra scans. By 38 weeks it had moved. It's quite common.

Oh god typos galore, sorry Blush

*and so has said there is a small chance i might need a caesarean.

Thanks Purple. I like to hear things are common, they worry me less!!

Yup I had it in 3 of my 4 pregnancies. It had moved up by the time I was scanned at 32 weeks. In a few cases they need to do a caesarean at 38 weeks

MaisieDotes · 17/09/2015 17:23

Yes, like PPs I had this in my last pregnancy and then when they scanned again at 34 weeks it had moved.

They told me at the time that it moves in 90% of cases.

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 17/09/2015 17:37

90% sounds hopeful. I'm trying to be receptive to surgery incase it happens but I hate the idea.

Moves in around 90% of cases. Less likely if it's entered over the cervix, more likely if it's just very close.

I'm in the other 10% and will need a section at 38 weeks. Hey ho ;)

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 17/09/2015 17:57

I think I'm just going to have up wait till my next scan and see if they can give me a clearer idea then.

Did anyone find they had bleeds? I have read they are quite common with placenta previa, does anyone know why? Is it because the movement of the uterus is stretching it?

The bleeds occur as the uterus expands and the bit of placenta pulls away from the uterine wall. I think about 50% of cases bleed - I'm sure you've been told this anyway, but if you do have a bleed don't mess around - get yourself to hospital pronto. I've been lucky so far and have had no bleeding.

It's fairly common to have a low lying placenta at week 20 - the uterus still has a lot of growing to do. The lower segment of the uterus kind of 'unfolds' and expands towards the end of pregnancy, carrying the placenta along with it (a bit like that classic 'dots on a balloon' experiment they do to show you the universe expanding.) by week 32 they'll have a much better handle on whether its moved or not. Like I say, mine hasn't (damn) but 90% do, so you have a very good chance of having a natural birth.

madwomanbackintheattic · 17/09/2015 18:09

Yep, mine moved by the 28 week point. Then I ended up with a planned section anyway as at 38 weeks they decided dd1 was too mahoosive for me to deal with.

katienana · 17/09/2015 18:12

I had it at 20 weeks and by 32 weeks it had moved. No bleeds. I got to see that ds would be born with a full head of hair which was nice.

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 17/09/2015 18:16

Oh lovely, thank you so much girls, feel a bit weepy now Blush

I've had three miscarriages in the last two years and this is my last shot at this pregnancy lark due to age. I would love to be able to have a problem free birth and all this talk of extra scans and intervention just scares me a bit.

With my son they were frightening the life out of me about a fibroid. It caused no problems whatsoever and now they couldn't care less about that (it's still there) and instead I feel a bit scared about my placenta instead.

As others have said most move up, about 90% on a posterior placenta, less on anterior but that's usually because of previous c section scars. If you've got an unscarred uterus you have a good chance.

I was one of the unlucky 10%, first pregnancy, no risk factors. Low at 20 weeks, fine at 32 weeks (the NHS has 2cm as their cut off unlike other countries), moved down and out at 35 weeks. DS is fine though but it was scary.

Junosmum · 17/09/2015 18:46

Yeah, don't worry. Got told this at 20 week scan, got another at 32 weeks and honestly haven't given it a second thought. There are loads of reasons I, or anyone else might end up with a section, at least this would be planned!

verystressedmum · 17/09/2015 19:24

I only found out I had this when I started bleeding at 26 weeks. It didn't move and I was booked for a CS at 39 weeks but went into labour at 37 weeks, in the theatre I was given spinal block and examined and they found dd had pushed it out of the way, she was born naturally.

Cherryblossomsinspring · 17/09/2015 19:41

Yep. It's very common. In most cases a partial cover will move up and out of the way. Don't worry about it till you see at the next scan.

chopsface · 17/09/2015 19:59

Like the others say, its quite common. I'm due to have a scan at 36 weeks to check mine. The sonographer was so reassuring that I didn't even think about it, I was just so pleased to see my baby again! She told me 90% move up, that's good odds in my view :-)

Skiptonlass · 17/09/2015 20:16

Honestly try not to worry. If it's picked up, they'll monitor it and do the best thing for you if it's still low later on. In my case, that's a cs :) but it'll be a nice, calm, planned Cs.
If you start to bleed, they'll get you in hospital to monitor you and again, you'll be in the right place with the right care. So whether it moves or it doesn't, you're on their radar and being cared for appropriately :)

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 17/09/2015 21:20

Has anyone else had any feelings of pressure above their cervix as I've been feeling quite uncomfortable on and off and I'm now wondering if it could be linked to the placenta being low lying?

Also is there any link between this condition causing cervical incompetence? I wanted to have my cervix length checked due to one LLETZ and one ERPC (plus the birth of my son) but the consultant said it was unnecessary. Now I'm feeling these weird low down pressure feelings I'm wondering if I should push to have my cervix checked.
