Placenta Praevia

I know that there's nothing I can do about it, but did anyone have a private scan between the 20 week and 32 week NHS scans to see if the placenta had moved up?

I'm tempted... It's £100 but might stop me worrying (or help me mentally prepare for a c-section). At the moment I'm completely in the dark...

I'm in the same boat as you. Midwife said it's very likely to move up but will keep an eye on your thread to see what others are planning- I've no idea!

How far along are you? Feels like an age to wait for any information given it can be quite serious!
I also feel like my uterus is about to fall out... Awful!

Hadn't even considered it! I've got 9 weeks until my next scan and I'm not even thinking about it. My concern is that baby is ok, and I can feel them wriggling! I'm very relaxed about how baby will enter the world, I've never had a 'dream' birth in mind which I think makes it easier!

Mama I'm just 20 weeks- I had my scan on Monday. They did the bonus Muffscan (as my sister has been calling it) to identify that the placenta was low and made an appointment for 32 weeks to check it again. I was just told that it may well move up (the midwife said this as also noted as low on 12 week scan) and to report any bleeding immediately.
I haven't given it much thought but then saw your thread and wondered what others are planning.
If I'm honest, I probably won't have a scan and will wait and see what happens and follow the advice at that stage. At 32 weeks there's still 2 months to get my head around whatever's discovered. As with Juno, I've not got a dream birth in mind.

Hello,

Glad to hear you're both relaxed about it, and you're right, there's still two months to get your head around it if it hasn't moved. I guess I'm just feeling soooo heavy below and want to know if it's the placenta or something else. Definitely didn't feel this bad with DS!

Even if you do pay for the extra scan you may still end up without a definite answer. I was told mine was touching the os at 20 weeks but wasn't too worried as 9/10 seen at 20 weeks will move. I had another scan at 34 weeks and was told that it had moved a bit but not enough but that there was still time so am being scanned again tomorrow at 37 weeks. So you could pay for the private scan and still not know what's going to happen!

Percy, you're so right...

Must be patient and try to stop worrying. Just really uncomfortable.

I wouldn't. I have been having scans every 4 weeks since 20 weeks, at 28w my placenta had only moved 0.5cm so I had a massive panic thinking I would need a section. By my 32 week scan it had moved 3.5cm and the baby's head was below the edge so I was told it was completely safe.

I think if it's not moved as much as you need it to it'll only make you worry about something that still might not necessarily be a problem in a couple of weeks time.

Also, think of how many nappies/sleep suits/blankets that £100 could buy, because in reality it might not put your mind at ease at all and might not be an accurate representation of what will happen at your 32/36 week scan.

More good points! Has anyone else had this constant pulling/heaviness?

Re. The pulling/heaviness, maybe speak to your MW about a referral to a physio. It sounds like the start of SPD. I felt utterly stupid describing it to my MW as 'feeling like everything is going to fall out' when I stood up, but luckily she knew exactly what I meant and it turns out it was all the ligaments loosening.

Skiptonlass · 18/09/2015 09:31

I wouldn't bother - most of the movement happens in the last few weeks so it's unlikely your scan would be informative for you. I was scanned at 32 and then again at 35 (it's not moved for me, I hope you're one of the luckier 90%!)

And do see a physio! That pulling/heavy feeling was how my spd started. Get it caught quickly and do the excercises they give you - it can help.

RockerMummy184 · 18/09/2015 09:40

(Basic pelvic floor exercises are a good start if there's a long wait for an appointment like there was with mine)

MamaDuckling · 18/09/2015 10:54

Oh I definitely have SPD! Didn't realise the heaviness was part of that - I need to keep my knees glued together at night, and standing up hurts (as does sitting)!
